[This invention. appertains to new and useful improvements in'hold'ers and more particularly to aholder for cleaning material such as steel he principal object 'of the present invention is to provide a holder which can be merely set upon a pad of steel Wool or similar material while in released position and then by actuating the device/grasps the material in such a way as to firmly hold it in place so that it can b'e used conveniently in various cleaning and abrading operations'.
During the following specification other important objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent to the reader.

Figure 7' is a perspective view of the bell crank. Referring to the drawings wherein like numerals designate like parts, it can be seen that numeral 5 represents a hollow handle of any desired shape in cross section, the upper portion of which is flared as at a. The top 6 of this handle is provided with a depressed portion 1 in the form of a trough extending inwardly from one edge thereof. A short branch trough or depression 8 extends off of the depression I as shown in Figure 1. The bottom of the trough l is provided with an elongated slot 9 through which the rod I is slidable, this rod Hlabove the slot 9 being provided with a head ll against which the laterally disposed end portion l2 of the strip spring I3 normally engages to hold the head in operated position, this spring l3 being suitably anchored as at I4 to one said wall of the trough l. V The rod [0 extends downwardly in the handle and connects to the laterally disposed lug at one end of the bell crank I6 which is swingably mounted on the pin H.
The lower end of the handle.5 is provided with lugs l8 which extend through openings in the base plate 19 and these lugs are bent inwardly as shown in Figure 2 so that the handle is positively connected to the base l9; V The base I9 is provided with radially disposed slots 26 at the edge portion thereof, opening through the edge of the base l9 and. at each side of each of the slots 2B is an apertured ear 2|.
Claw units generally referred to by numeral 22 in Figure 3 each consist of a U-shaped element 23 having apertured ears 2% depending from thebight portion thereof for interposition between apair of the ears 2i on the base is so that a ring passed through the apertured ears 2i and I 24 pivotally connects the unit 22 to the base l8. The outer leg portion b; of each of these: units 22 is provided with spurs 25 curved in the direction of the end of the legs, While the other leg of each unit 22 is provided with a hood like structure having an inclined wall 28. Each of these hood structures 2'! is provided with a struck out portion'bent downwardly to form a guide fora coiled compressible spring 29 which is interposed between the base plate l9 and the inner s ide of the hood 2?! as shown in Figure 2. Thus; the tendency of the spring 29'is to force the hood upwardly and swing the unit 23 around so that the U-shaped member 23 will depend with th spurs 26 resting against a pad or mass 'of steel wool 30. V
The retractor and 'detent for these units 22 consist of a plate 3i provided with a portion 32 extending through slots 33 in opposite side walls of the handle 5. This plate 3| is provided with an annular trough like formation 34, one Wall of which is inclined as at 35. The edge portion of this plate 3| beyond the trough 34 is provided with a depending apron 35 vertically slotted to receive the aforementioned spurs 26.
A connector 31 having one end pivoted to the lower end of the bell crank It and at its other end pivoted to the ears 3% on the portion 32 of the plate 3| serves as a connecter between the plate 3! and the bell crank I6.
In order to release the pad of steel wool 30, the spring I3 is pressed against the adjacent side wall of the trough I, thus releasing the head ll permitting the rod II! to move to the left in Figure 2. This releases the plate 3| so that it can move upwardly and spring 29 swing the units 22 outwardly so that the pad 32 can be readily disconnected therefrom. By leaving the holder in this condition, a new pad can be engaged against the base l9, or the holder upon the pad by engaging the base against the pad, and subsequently, the head H can be moved to the right in Figure 1 to the position shown which will result in the engagement of the inclined Wall 35 against the inclined walls 28 and this Wedging or cam action will return the unit 22 to the upright position shown in Figure 2 with the spurs 26 embedded in the mass 30 and stretching the same across the bottom side of the base plate l9.
While the foregoing specification sets forth the invention in specific terms, it is to be understood that numerous changes in the shape, size and materials may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as claimed hereinafter.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A holder of the character described comprising upper and lower plates, the lowermost plate constituting a baseand the uppermost plate having a peripheral downturned slotted flange, a plurality of swingable members on the edge portion of said base and positioned adjacent the inner face of said flange, claw members on the swingable members, spring means urging the claws outwardly through the slots, cooperating means on said uppermost plate and said members for retracting the claws upon the movement of the plates toward each other, a handle connecting the plates for movement relative to each other and means carried by the handle for causing relative movement of the plates.
2. A holder of the character described comprising upper and lower plates, the lowermost plate constituting a base and the uppermost plate having a peripheral downturned slotted flange, a plurality of swingable members on the edge portion of said base and positioned adjacent the inner face of said flange, claw members on the swingable members, spring means urging the claws outwardly through the slots, a handle extending upwardly from the base, said uppermost plate being slidable on the handle and cam means between the uppermost plate and the swingable members for retracting the claws, said cam means consisting of upwardly andoutwardly inclined portions on the underside of the upper plate in sliding contact with said swingable members,
3. A holder of the character described comprising upper and lower plates, the lowermost plate constituting a base and the uppermost plate having a peripheral downturned slotted flange, a plurality of swingable members on the edge portion of said base and positioned adjacent the inner face of said flange, claw members on the swingable members, spring means urging the claws outwardly through the slots, a handle extending upwardly from the base, said uppermost plate being slidable on the handle and cam means between the uppermost plate and the swingable members for retracting the claws, said cam means consisting of, upwardly and outwardly inclined portions on the underside of the upper plate in sliding contact with said swingable members; and means on the handle for holding said inclined portions of the uppermost plate in engagement with the swingable members.
4. A holder of the character described comprising upper and lower plates, the lowermost plate constituting a base and the uppermost plate having a peripheral downturned slotted flange, a plurality of swingable members on the edge portion of said base and positioned adjacent the inner face of said flange, claw members on the swingable members, spring means urging the claws outwardly through the slots, a handle extending upwardly from the base, said uppermost plate being slidable on the handle and cam means between the uppermost plate and the swingable members for retracting the claws, said cam means consisting of upwardly and outwardly inclined portions on the underside of the upper plate in sliding contact with said swingable members, and means on the handle for holding said inclined portions of the uppermost plate in engagement with the swingable members, said means comprising a manipulating lever accessible through the upper portion of the handle and a bell crank link connecting the lever to the upper plate to raise and lower said plate.
