"niture and has more particular. reference to tables orstands-for general use; My
invention is however especially adapted for kitchen tablesor tables of this general type. The; primary purpose of the present inventionisto provide .an all-metal table of as to be strong: and durable and to enable productionata vcomparatively low cost. To this end I have aimedwto construct the principal parts such asthetop, side rails, and
qlegs,1of-sheet 1netal,=so-that they may be .stampedor pressed to shape, or formed by a simple bending operationq Parts formed in this mannermay be punched to provide boltor screw holes and to provide the requii y site openings for sliding drawers if such are p h desired,-thus to facilitate and reduce the cost ofvmanufacture. To further promote saidngeneral object Ihave provided a sin gle coupling bracket for each cornerjof the .table, preferably in the form of a casting,
shaped for attachmentto thetop, side rails,
and leg and rigidly holding these parts in f fixedoperative relation. Said parts arelassociated and connected in a novelmanner lwithtthe icorner brackets so as to facilitate: assembling, produceaneat andtrim outward appearance, I strengthen the corner structure.-
Anotherflobject isv to sodesign the tmmetal structure that the side rails 'may be -made asa single unit'andthis uiiit as well as the legs may be independently finished. qMy improvements also enable] independent construction ands finish of thetable top as @a unit, it. being desirable for certain classes :1 ofitablesto finish theltable top. bya baked enamel process in order to give it a-clearfer luster" and a more lasting and serviceable ifiIllSh than the side rails and -of which isless expensive. 1 Otherwobjectsand attendant advantages 3 will be appreciated by those who are skilledin this art as @theinvention,becomeslbetter y understood by reference to the following del scription when considered in connection with the accompanying drawings,:in which @F igure l is -a fragmentary perspective and reinforce and sheet legs; the finish TAnLE 1 7.- Serial in). 181,735.

Fig. 3 is a" verticalsectioritakenon the line 33 of Fig. 2. fthischaracter, so designed and constructed The table top; in case of a four-1e ged table, is rectangular in'shape and-pre erably formed of a single piece of sheet metal shaped to'provide a top proper, designated LTheside rails, of which there are four in the case of a rectangular table, aredesignated generally by 6; -These side ,railsare; 5
likewise preferably" formed from a "single PIBCG OIE ShQGt metal bent to rectangular shape andunited at theends asby welding,
mounted .uponand between the opposed side rails. The legs are likewise preferably "formed of sheet Inetal, each legflbein'gw fformed angular in cross-section, providing leg flanges 8 1n angular relatloni l In order to connect and hold the above described parts in fixed relation and with thetrigi'dity necessary for said metal con- 1 struction I havedevised a single coupling bracket for each corner of the table, these brackets-being preferably cast to shape. 'Eachflbracket has two vertical parts. or flanges x9 and 10 inthe same an 'ular rela tion asthe cornier portion of the si e rails and the angleof the legs sothat these bracket 2" flanges may. fitin anycorner of the side rails fiat. against the sides thereof) as shown in Figs Q and 3. Thesefianges provide broad pads against which the side rails are'adapted to be clamped and which serve to reinforce the corner structure} and to prevent distortion thereof; iriA fter the coupling bracket has been positioned in a corner of the Lside 1,763,341 r v i 3 the leg to the bracket with the rails clamped firmly therebetween, the bracket having a horizontal top portion, and atop member resting on the top portion of the bracket and secured thereto.
5. In an article of sheet metal furniture, the combination of sheetrnetal side rails forming an angle or'corner, a sheet metal -leg of angular cross-section fitting on the n corner with theflanges thereof abutting the rails, an angular bracket of heavy metal construction also arranged to fit'the corner in abutment With said rails, the leg and bracket being arranged to cooperate With 0119 another by the one member fitting on the Y insideof the corner and the other mem; ber fitting on the outside thereof to secure the side rails to the leg, there being fastening means passing through the rails from dthe one member to the other to draw the members together andclamp the side rails rigidly therebetween, said bracket having a flat horizontal top portion and a top resting on the latter and secured thereto. In Witness of the foregoing I affix my signature.
G. ALAN BRANTINGHAM.
