Description

B. S. KEARNEY.
PLOW.
No.174,539. Patented March 7,1876.
WITNESSES INVENTOR ".PETERS, PNQTO-LITHOGRAPHER. WISHINGTON D C INITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BENJAMIN S. KEARNEY, OF FRANKLINTON, NORTH CAROLINA.
IMPROVEMENT IN PLO WS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 174,539, dated March 7, 1876; application filed February 5, 1876.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, BENJAMIN S. KEARNEY, of Franklinton, in the county of Franklin and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Flows; and 1 do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings are representations of perspective views of my device, and Figs. 3, 4, 5, 6, 7,8, and 9 are detail views thereof.
My invention relates to plows; and it consists in the construction and general arrangement of the plow-standard, whereby the same is adapted to receive a variety of points,
shares, 860., as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawing, A represents the plow-standard, the upper portion of which is to pass through the beam, and secured to the same by a key, outf, or other suitable mechanical means. This part of the standard is formed with a shoulder, a, 011 each side for the beam to rest on. The lower portion of the standard A is enlarged equally on both sides, as shown at b in Fig. 2, and from the rear part extends a central wing, B, leaving a shoulder, d, on each side thereof. To the standard thus constructed may be attached various parts as, for instance, 0 and D, the upper and lower portions, respectively, of the front point. These parts are formed with suitableside shoulders e e, and fastened to the standard by bolts through the top. E is the winger side of the point, and provided with a side flange to be fastened by a lateral bolt to the standard. Gis the mold-board, also provided with a side flange, h, to be fastened by lateral bolts to the standard. H is a reversible side piece,
forming a finish between the outside of the front points and the land-side I, said side piece being fastened by the same bolts that secure the wing E and mold-board G, and the land-side I is fastened by lateral bolts to the win g B.
The parts 0, D, E, G, and I are made for both right and left hand plowsthat is, different sets for each kind of plow-and are interchangeable 011 the same standard. The sidepiece H is used for both by simply reversing it from one side to the other.
When both right and left hand attachments are used the parts 0 D are dispensed with,
and the upper and lower front points 0 D are substituted therefor.
In the wing B, at the rear of the standard, are holes 00 for the attachment of a rear sweep often used in the cultivation of cotton.
By having the side attachments of different dimensions a number of different plows may be used, either right or left hand, or both combined.
It will readily be seen that, by thus constructing the various attaclnnents, a great saving is effected, as when one part is worn out that part only needs to be renewed.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The plow-standard A, constructed as described, with itslower end enlarged equally on both sides, and provided with the perforated rear wing B, whereby the standard is adapted to receive a series of interchangeable attachments, as herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
BENJAMIN S. KEARNEY.
Witnesses:
