IMPROVEMENT IN COTTON-SCRAPING PLOWS.

To all whom it may concern: i

Be it known that I, JAMES M. COBB, of Jackson, in the county of Madison and in the State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cotton-Scraping Blows; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.

The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of the frame to which the scraper is attached,'and also in the set of the handles, all of which will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side view, and Fig. 2 a rear elevation, of my entire cotton-scraper. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the frame.

A represents the plow-beam with handles B B. C represents the scraping-blade attached to the frame, and the frame is attached to the under side at the rear end of the beam A. This frame is constructed of a top bar, D, with two standards, E E, and a foot-piece, G, the standards being curved outward to the left and forward, as shown.

It will be seen that the front standard, E, is bent forward on a downward curve, and that the rear standard, E, at the upper part, is also bent downward and forward, and then has a short outward and downward bend to the bottom, so as to contract the length of the foot-piece between the standards, thereby preventing the clods in the rear of the scraper from being thrown over on the plants when the scraper is in operation. The left sides of the standards and the left edge of the footpiece are flush with each other, while the right-hand side of the foot-piece extends considerably to the right of the standards.

The scraper C is so attached that the left side extends just beyond the left edge of the ont standard E, to which it is secured, as shown in Fig. 2; and the right side of the scraper has a bearing at the bottom 'all along the front edge of the foot-piece, and extends just to the right of the right edge of the same. By this manner of forming the frame by bulging outward the standards thereof, an open space is left under the beam above the scraper, which allows the clods and weeds to fall over and through to prevent thechoking of the plow. The scraper is also so at-` tached that a firm bearing. is had on the front standard and foot-piece. By means of these bearings the scraper-blade will not spring or easily become broken. e

It will be observed that the beam is brought into a position almost centrally over the scraper, and the handles are set in the beam at an angle, and, when the scraper has been placed upon the side of the ridge to be scraped, they will assume a vertical position, and any down right force given by a person upon the handles is naturally distributed along the cuttingedge of the scraper.

The forward bolt a, which passes through the beam and secures the frame thereto, passes through a slotted opening, b, in this frame, which admits of the frame and scraper w being moved either to the right or left in a lateral direction. The bolts d d, which fasten the scraper C to the frame, also pass through vertical slotted openings in this frame, which admits of the scraper being raised or lowered, as desired. e

Being aware that a plow having its beam placed over the center of its plow-blade to secure a central draft is not new, I disclaim such as being broadly my invention.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Iatent, is- A The combination of the frame, consisting of the top bar D, outwardly-bent standards E E curved downward and forward, as described, and the foot-piece G extending Vto the right of the standards, with the scraper C, the beam A, and the handles B B, all substantially as set forth.
