Description

G. C. THRIFT Nov. 19, 1929.
PROPELLER GUARD Filed Oct. 4, 1926 Patented Nov. 1 9, 192$ PROPELLER GUARD Application filed October 4, 1926. Serial "no. 139,371.
ment of parts and use, an example of which 7 is given in this specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein 5 The figure shows a fragmentary sectional view of an aeroplane propeller showing the propeller hub and guard in section.
In the drawing the numeral 1 designates the propeller shaft which is driven from the motor. There is a hub secured to the forward end of this shaft consisting of the annular clamp plates 2 and 3, the former of which is secured to the shaft 1 and the inner ends of the propeller blades 4 are clamped bet-ween these plates bythe clamp bolts 5, said bolts serving to secure the hub plates 2 and 3 together as well as to secure the propeller blades between said plates. Theouter hub plate 3 is formed with a forwardly exrings 7 and 8 secured therearound. There is a disc-like guard 7 having a central sleeve 9, which rotates around the sleeve 6 and is pro-- vided with the internal spaced bearing rings 10 andll, interposed between which and the respective rings 7 and 8 are anti-friction bearings 12. The outer end of the sleeve 9 is V the guard 7 is not used, isliable to draw the; operator within the range of the rapidly retending sleeve 6 having the spaced bearing volving blades andhe is liable to be injured thereby. When the guard 7 is used the operator, in spinning the blades with one hand, may brace himself by placing the other hand against said hand rest and thus hold himselfi at all times out of the range of the propeller blades and should the hand slip'off the said rest the guard 7 will form a further protection against injury to the operator from said blades. 7
What I claim is: V 1. The combinationwith the propeller of an aeroplane, of a disc-like guard rotatably mounted on the outer end of the hub thereof 1 and a central oval hand rest carried by thesggeo hand rest rotatably mounted on the outer,.;,,
or forward, endof the hub of the propeller and a flared guard projected from the hand rest.
3. The combination with a propeller, ofa hand rest rotatably mounted on the outer, or zo forward, end of the hub of the propeller and a guard around said hand rest and proj'ectj ing outwardly therefrom. r v 4. The combination with the propeller' of an aeroplane, of a disc-like guard mounted j5 1 on the outer end of the hub thereof and adapted to rotate in either direction independently of the propeller or crank shaft and a central forwardly projecting hand rest, carried by said guard. e 30 5. The combination with a propeller, of a hand rest rotatably mounted at the forward end of the hub of the propeller and a disc-like hand guard attached to and surrounding the I hand rest. 6. The combination with a propeller mounted upon a revolvable crankshaft, of
a hand rest rotatably mounted upon the forward" end of thelhub of the propeller, said restcomprising a clamp plate secured to-thegr eo- OFFNE GRIFFIN c. THRIFT, or nonsron, TEXAS propeller, said clamp plate having a forwardly extending sleeve, race. rings carried by said sleeve, a disc-like guard having a cen-. tral sleeve which carries race rings adapted to coincide with the first mentioned race rings and anti-friction bearings located 'between the respective rings of the respective sleeves.
'In'testimony whereof I have signedmy name to this specification,
GRIFFIN C. THRIFT.
