IMPROVEMENT IN BELT-COUPLINGS.- i
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l'73,070, dated February 1, 1876; application iile December 27, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES K. P. SHELTON, of Gaston, in the county of Sumter and State of Alabama, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Belt-Coupling, of which the following is a specification:
Figure l is a top View of the ends of a belt connected by my improved coupling. Fig. 2 is an under-side View of the same. Fig. 3 is an edge View of the same, partly in section, to show the construction. Fig. 4. is a perspective view of a section of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish an improved coupling for connecting the ends of a belt, which will cause the ends of the belt to draw in a line with each other, will enable' the belt to be quickly coupled and uncoupled, shall be strong and durable, and will got interfere with the smooth running of the elt;
The invention consists in thel combination of the lace and the two wires with the ends of a belt provided with the square holes, in the manner hereinafter fully described, and in the combination of the notched strips with the wires, the lace, and the ends of a belt, as hereinafter fully described.
A and B are the ends of a belt to b'e connected or coupled. Inl the ends A B, near their edges, are formed two rows of holes, a
b', which holes should bev made square, to cause the lace C to lie smoothly upon the belt. One more hole should be formed in one end of the belt than in the other, and the holes in each end should be opposite the spaces between the holes in the other end. D are two Wires, ot' a length equal to the width of the belt, and which areplaced upon the outer side of the belt directly over the holes a and b.
In apply-ing the coupling, one end of the lace G is knotted to the end of the wire D, or
riveted to the belt at the first hole of the row that has the greatest number of holes, and is passed around said wire and drawn through said hole. The lacev C is then -passed up through the rst hole of the other row, over the other wire, and down through 'the same hole. The lace is then passed up through the second hole of the rst or long row, over the where it is knotted to the wire or riveted to the belt.
By this arrangement the lace C will lie smooth upon the under side of the belt, and
.the wires, loops, andknots will all be upon the upper or outer side of the belt.
In case greater strength be required the lace C may be used double, the-two laces be- -ing applied at the same time and in the same way, as hereinbefore described.
E are two 'strips of belting,`rubber, or other suitable material, in the edges of which are formed notches of the same width as the square holes through the belt. The aps or tongues thus formed are slipped beneath the Wires D, in the spaces between the loops o't'A the lace C, as shown in Fig. 1. The wires D thus bear upon the strips E, and are kept from wearin g the belt. The lace C soon beds itself in the under side of the ends of the belt, and is thus protected from bein-g worn.
To uncouplev the belt, toshorten it or place it upon another machine, the wire D, that passes through the loops of the lace C, upon the end of the belt that has the fewest holes, ,l
is drawn out, which allows the loops of the lace to be drawn out of their holes, and the belt is uncoupled. The belt is recoupled by passing the loops of' the lace C backthrough the holes in the end of the belt, and slipping the wire through said loops, thus enabling the belt to be uncoupled and recoupled very y quickly.
Having thus described my'invention, I claim v as new and desire to secure by Letters Pat entu 1. The combination of the lace C and the wires D with the ends AB of a belt, provided with the square holes a b', in substantially the manner herein shown and described..v Y
2. The combination of the notched strips E with the wires D, the lace C, and the ends A 'B of a belt, substantially as herein shown and described. u
J. K. P. SHELTON.
