APPLICATION FILED JULY 27, 19M.
Patented Sept. 28,1915. 7
MATTRESS,
Application filed July 27, 1914.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, lVILLIAM Evan's Josnrn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hemlock, in the county of Perry and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mattresses, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in mattresses and more particularly to what will be hereinafter known as a reversible mattress, the main object of the present invention being the provision of a mattress of this character which is formed of two separable sections, whereby either of the sections may be reversed independent of the other so that should the head or foot portion of'one of the sections become depressed, it can be quickly and readily reversed, without interfering with the position of the opposite section.
Another object of the present invention is the provision of a device of the above character which will possess advantages in points of efliciency-and durability, is inexpensive to manufacture and, at the same time, is simple in construction and operation.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangeed in accordance with my invention; and
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view taken through two connected sections.
1 Referring more particularly to the .drawings, 1 and 2 indicate the two mattress sections, each section being formedsubstantially alike and of the same size and width. .Each section is provided upon each end thereof with the spaced buckles 3 which are adapted to be engaged by the ends of the straps 4. Each side of each section is provided with two horizontal series of loops, indicated at 5 and 5. The series 5 is ar ranged above the series 5, the two series considered as entireties being parallel to each other. As disclosed in Fig. 2, the loops Specification of Letters Patent.

are so arranged on opposite sides of the sec tions that when two sections are mated, the loops of the one will lie between the loops of the other whereby the straps -& may be woven through these two upper series and the two lower series at the meeting terminals of the sections. The ends of the upper strap l are secured to one section, while the ends of the lower strap are secured to the other section, as disclosed in Fig. 1.
The sections 1 and 2 are each provided upon their ends with handles 6 which are in the form of suitable straps, the ends of which are sewed or otherwise secured to the upper edge of the mattress. said handles being preferably formed of material which can be readily folded in place against the mattress sections, so as not to be in the way when the mattress is in use. The loops 5 and 5' which are arranged upon the sides of the mattress are formed by having a strip of material extending longitudinally across the side edges of the mattress sections and the ends thereof secured by sewing or other suitable means to the binding of the sections, while the central portion thereof is secured to the central portion of the edge of the mattress, whereby to form two separate loops arranged one above the other to receive the retaining straps 4. From this it will be apparent that the straps 4'. may be quickly and readily inserted within the loops 5 and 5 or'removed therefrom.
From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be apparent that I have provided a simple and durable mattress formed of one or more sections. whereby each of the sections may be quickly and readily reversed without interfering with any of the remain ing sections and securely fastened in its operative positions without being reversed. It will be understood that these sections are preferably formed of the same size and ma terial and are of simple construction. so-
obvious that various changes in the details of construction and in the proportions may be resorted to for successfully carrying my invention into practice, without sacrificing any of the novel features or departing from j the scope of the invention, as defined by the appended claim.
Having thus described this What I claim is:
A mattress including a plurality of sepinvention,
arate sections and means for detachably connecting the sections, said means including a plurality of loops attached to the sidewalls of. the sections at the meeting; terminals thereof, said loops being-arranged in upper and lower horizontal series, the loops of one section being adapted to lie between the loops of the next ad acent section, the upper horizontal series of loops f-the adjoining sections being horizontally alined,
and the lower horizontal series of the adjoining sections being horizontally alined, a strap passing through the two upper series of loops of the adjoining sections, a strap passing through the two series of lower straps of the adjoining sections, and buckles secured to the side walls of the mattress section for securing the terminals of the straps thereto, the buckles for the upper strap being secured to one section and the buckles for the lower strap being secured to the G. G. KERN.
