Application led January This invention relates to improved means for attaching a cross beam on the end of a post and is particularly adapted for use in concrete form construction for fitting and securing together the structural members of the temporary Jforms. I
Since the concrete forms are temporarily set up for use and then taken down and stored until again required, and used over and over again, many of the details of construction, Such as attaching a beam to a post, may be standardized and used with light modifications in the many different Y structures.
The main objects of' the present invention are to provide an improved post head or iitting, whereby two parts of a form disposed transversely to each other may be quickly assembled with a saving in the labor and may be quickly and completely disassembled to save storage space; to provide a fitting of this kind which is readily adjustable; and to provide a fitting of this character which is Simple in operation so that it may be applied by even unskilled labor.
An illustrative embodiment of this invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is an elevation of the improved post head Showing it applied to an upright post and a horizontal Stringer.
Fig. 2 is an elevation taken from the right of Fig. l.
Fig. 3 is a plan of the fitting in place on the post, a portion of the Stringer being shown in dotted outline.
Fig. 4 is an elevation similar to Fig. l, showing a modified form of post head.
In the form shown, the attachment embraces the Stringer and is preferably nailed thereto. A. socket member or Sleeve is provided in the attachment for fitting over the upper end ot the post and one or more wedges may be driven through the side of the sleeve for securing the attachment to the post.
In the drawings, a beam or Stringer 1 is Shown resting on the top of a post 2 and secured thereto means of an improved fitting comprising a sleeve or collar portion 3 adapted to embrace the end of the post and havingupstanding flanges 4 for embracing the Stringer 1. able fastening means 5 and is secured to the post by one or more wedges 6 and The parts are preferably so relatively arranged that the Stringer rests directly on the post end. The wedges 6 and 7 are seated in keyways or pockets 8 and 9 respectively formed on adjacent sides of the collar 3, and located in different planes so that the wedges will not interfere with each other. The keyvvays 8 and 9 extend through the walls of the sleeve 3 so as to permit the wedges to engage the sides of the post. lVhen the wedges are driven, they are jammed between the angularly disposed outer walls 10 of the pockets 8 or 9 and the adjacent edge of the beam and effectually lock the litting in place.
Inasmuch as the weight of the transverse member may be carried directly by the post 2, the attachment may serve merely as a means for holding the Stringer in place. The adjustments may be readily made and the attachment is adaptable to slight variations in size of the timbers used. In disassembling, the wedges are knocked out and the Stringer removed from the post. The fitting may be left nailed to the beam or nails withdrawn with very little difficulty and the structure is thereby quickly disassembled.
In the` forms shown in Figures 1, 2 and 3, a fitting is Shown which is adaptable to timbers of approximately the same thickness. In the form shown in Figure 4, in whichthe upright flanges 4 are spaced inwardly from the sides ol the sleeve, a narrower beam may be used.
Although but one specific embodiment of this invention has been herein shown and described, itywill be understood that certain details of the construction shown may be altered or omitted without departing from the spirit of this invention z l claim:
