HORN VALVE.
Application filed December 12, 1927.
This invention relates to valved wind musical instruments and especially to horns cornets. or the like.
In valved wind musical instruments of the horn type it. is essential that the reciprocatory valve be eti'ectually secured against any rotary movement in the valve casing in order that an eliicient registration of the tone openings be effected.
The particular object of my invention is to provide a horn valve having an improved key to cause the reciprocatory movement of the valve to be in a perfectly straight line.
Another object of my invention is to provide a simple and cheap horn valve key which is readily applied to or removed from. the valve.
Other objects of the invention are mentioned and described herein.
The preferred embodiment of my invention is illustrated in t-l e accompanying drawinp', wherein Figure 1 illustrates a horn valve casing and valve, the former is broken away to disclose my improved key applied to the valve; Fig. 2 is a section taken on line 2 2 of Fig. 1i F 3 is a section taken on line 33 of Fig. 1; Fig. at is a perspective view the key alone; Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the top end of the horn valve; and Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the top end of the horn valve casing.
Similar nmnerals of reference indicate ilte parts throughout the several views on he dra 1112'.
Referring to the detail of the drawing the numeral it indicates a well known type oft tnluilar horn valve casing which is provided with the tone cmniections 2, the lattor being shown in tragnnent. The numeral 3 indicates the usual cylindrical valve reciprocally arranged within the casing 1 and adapted for manual actuation by the valve stem at which pierces the casing cap 5, the upper end of said stem having the usual linger tip (3 mounted thereon.
The lower end of the stem 4 may he screw threaded into the valve at 7 and may be provided with shoulder 8 adjacent the upper limit of the screw threads thereon. The nu.- meral 9 indicates the improved valve key body. preferably made of ductile metal, and which may be annular in formation and provided with the integral and marginal key prong 1O bent therefrom at substantially right angles and depending therefrom when Serial No. 239,331.
mounted upon the valve. The key body 9 may be centrally apertured at 11 and is adapted to be secured upon the valve top by the stem shoulder S which engages the upper surface thereof when the stem is screwed into position in the valve, and in which position the key prong 10 is arranged partially in the peripheral longitudinal slot 12 formed in the valve 3, and partially in the longitudinal key-way 13 termed in the bore of the valve casing 1 there being sufiicient clearance between the key prong 10 and said key-way to enable the operator to freely reciprocaie the valv 3.
An important feature of my improved valve key is the ease with which it is applie to or removed from the valve. It extremely simple, durable and cheap in construction.
rom the foregoing description considered in connection with the accompanying drawing it is believed that the construction, mannor of use and the various advantages oi my invention will be clearly understood. I desire to point out, however, that departure from the structures herein illustrated may be resorted to within the spirit and scope of my invention as defined in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. The combination with a horn valve casing and a valve reciprocally arranged therein, of means tor preventing rotation of the valve within the valve casing. said means incliu' ing registering longitudinal grooves torn ed in the valve outer periphery and the valve casing bore, and. an elongated tongue "113 both of said grooves.
'ihc combinaticm vith a horn valve casd a valve reciprocally arranged, there- 11".. of key nu, ns tor preventing rotation of the valve within the casing, said re means including registering longitudinal grooves termed in the valve outer periphery and the valve cz'ising bore, said valve groove extendine through the end thereof, and an elongated t: e inouuted in said valve g oove and ennu' said valve casing groove.
The combination with a horn valve casing'and a valve reciprocally arranged therein, of an elongated tongue and groove con nection between the valve. and valve casing: adapted to prevent rotation of the former within the latter, a valve stem, and means connecting the valve stem and said tongue for securing the latter to said valve.
4:. The combination with a horn valve casing and a valve reciprocally arranged there in, of a tongue and groove connection between the valve and valve casing adapted to prevent rotation of said valve Within the casing, said tongue bein provided With a lateral projection, and a valve stern mounted upon said valve and engaging said tongue lateral projection to fasten the tongue in position.
5. In combination, a horn valve casing, a valve reciprocally arranged therein, a tongue and groove connection between said valve and casing to prevent rotation of the former, said tongue being provided with an apertured lateral projection arranged upon the valve top end, and a valve stem threaded into said valve through the aperture in said tongue lateral projection and engaging the'latter to fasten said tongue in position.
In vitness whereof I have hereunto afiixed my signature this 9th day of December, 1927.
