, E. J. GULICK MOUTHPIECE FOR MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS Filed March 24. 1927 Patented Dec. 17, 1929 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE EDWARD J. GULICK, OF ELKHART, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR TO C. G. CONN, LTD., OF ELK HART, INDIANA, A CORPORATION OF INDIANA MOUTHPIECE FOR MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS Application filed March 24, 1927. Serial No. 177,880.
This invention relates to musical instruments, and especially to wind instruments in the horn class.
An object of this invention is to provide a mouthpiece for horns, or the like, which has a portion thereof made of hard rubber, bakelite, or similar material.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide a 'mouthpiece for horns, or the like, which is provided with a transparent section made of a phenolic condensation product, or the like, the metal holder whereof is provided with means for reinforcing the bakelite.
The preferred embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a View in elevation of the complete mouthpiece; Fig. 2 is a simi lar View in section; and Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the bakelite portion of the mouthpiece.
Similar numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views on they drawing.
Referring to the details of the drawing the numeral 1 indicates generally a mouthpiece for a born or cornet and comprising the metal holder section 2 and the cupped lip section 3, the latter being made preferably of transparent a phenolic condensation product, although hard rubber may be substituted with good results.
The mouthpiece sections 2 and 3 are provided with the registering passages of the usual contour.
The cupped section 3 is provided with a cylindrical section 6 which is exteriorly screw threaded into the cylindrical socket-like section 7 of the portion 2. And the holder section 7 is provided with the hollow and slight- 1y belled extension 8 which is adapted to engage about the tapered exterior 9 of the mouthpiece section 3 to reinforce the latter against breakage which would occur if the said extension were not provided. The end of the extension 8 is adapted to engage the shouldered portion 10 formed at the upper termination of the taper 9, with a snug fit.
The portion 11 of the exterior of the section 3 is preferably tapered exteriorly to conform with the belled extension portion 8 of the holder section, and their surfaces are preferably flush with each othertoenhance the artistic appearance of the mouthpiece when assembled. I
I claim:
1. A mouthpiece for a wind musical instrument comprising a metal holder section provided with a socketed end portion, the
latter being provided with a screw threaded bore and a smooth bore adjacent said threaded bore, and a cupped non-metallic mouthpiece section screwed into said holder socket and snugly fitting into the smooth bore portion of said holder socket.
2. A mouthpiece for a wind musical instru ment comprising a metal holder section provided with a socketed end portion, the latter being provided with a screw threaded bore and a belled extension, and a cupped nonmetallic mouthpiece section screwed into said holder socket. and snugly fitting into said belled section of said holder for reinforcing said mouthpiece section.
3. A mouthpiece for a wind musical instrument comprisinga metal holder section pro vided with a socketed end portion, the latter being provided with a belled extension, and a cupped non-metallic mouthpiece section rigidly mounted in said holder socket tion being snugly fitting into the belled ex tension of'said holder for reinforcing the mouthpiece section, theend of said belled ex tension engaging said shoulder at the termination of said mouthpiece section tapered portion.
In witness whereof I have aflixed my signature this 22d day of March, 1927,
EDWARD J. GULICK.
