Description
H. A. PALMER ESCUTCHEON PLATE Dec. 31, 1929.
Filed Jan. 5. 192s ATTORNEY.
Patented Dec. 31, 1929 PATENT OFFICE nAaRY A. PALMER, or JACKSON, MICHIGAN, AssIeNoRl rro nEYNoLDs .SPRING CoM- PANY, or JACKSON, MICHIGAN ESCUTCHEON PLATE Application `filed January 5, .1928. .Serial` No. ,2445,139.
The invention relates to an escutcheon plate.
rlhe object ot the present invention is to improve the construction of escutcheon plates and to provide a simple, practical and efficient escutcheon plate of inexpensive construction adapted to be molded of bakelite or other plastic material and equipped with means for providing a relative adjustment between the key hole of the escutcheon plate and the opening which receives the spindle ot the knob whereby the escutcheon plate will be adapted for use in connection with locks of various manufacturers producing locks having key holes located at different distances from the knob spindle.
Heretotore the diliculty of marketing a molded escutcheon plate has been due to the fact that various manufacturers of locks have had a different standard or distance between the key hole and the knob spindle, each manufacturer apparently purposely striving to torce dealers to buy locks, knobs and escutcheons. It is the purpose of the present invention to obviate this dii'liculty and provide a molded escutcheon plate adapted for use in connection with practically any door lock of the type employing escutcheon plates.
With these and other objects in view, the
invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims hereto appended, it being under- *5 stood that various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction,
within the scope ot the claims, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawings Figure 1 is an elevation of an escutcheon plate constructed in accordance with this invention.
Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal sectional view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on the line 8-3 of Fig. 2.
In the accompanying drawings in which is illustrated the preferred embodiment ot the yinvention l l designates a main .escutcheon plate constructed of bakelte .0.1" Other .QllSC material and `molded into the .desire .form .and provided at its lower portion with a key hole v2 and having @longitudinal slot Sspaeed.. .from thekey .holeam located at theupper portionA of the escutcheon plate. 'lhzelkey Jhole and the longitudinal slot which are arranged in spaced relation may, of course, 'be

is preferablyprovided with `a .marginal ilanoe L extending ,inwardly and adapted lto.
against `he surface of a door. Thelongitudiv11211 Slot of theescutehon .plate is Covered and concealed by .an auxiliary adj ustable plate 5 also constructed otinolded bakelite or `,other lsuitable plastic material and provided iwith a marginal llanlge 6 which lits against the outer face of tjhe -escutcheon plate over the slot V3. The marginal flanges ,of the main .escutcheon plateuand the ,auxiliary adjustable plate are preferably arranged at an angle or inclination topresent a beveled edge effect and the .edges .of the escutcheon plate 4and the auxiliary plate may be `curved as shown or of any .otherdesired coniiguration to provide an ornamental escutcheon of the desired design.
rvlhe vmxiliary .adjustable plate is provided with .a .central .opening for Vthe spindle of a knob and it has an annular llange or por-V tion' surrounding the opening fr' to form .an integral rose for .a knob. The rose portion 8 ot the adjustable plate provides a circular recess .or socket. for the shank of the knob and the adjustable plate is provided atits vinner face with a rectangular enlargement v9 having parallel side ,faces l0 fitting the side .walls of the longitudinal slot of the main escutcheon plate as clearly illus trated 'inFigz 3 of the drawing. The adjustable auxiliary plate is adapted to be moved upwardly or downwardly to arrange it the desired distance from the key hole Q so thatthe key hole ot the main escutcheon plate will align vand register with the key hole of a lock having its knob spindle arranged n the opening ofthe adjustable auxiliary plate. The auxiliary plate is clamped in its adjustment by means of screws 11 passing through clamping plates l2 and engaging threaded sleeves or bushings 13 embedded in the bakelite material of the auxiliary plate. The threaded bushings extend inwardly from the inner or rear face of the auxiliary plate and they are provided at their inner ends with anchoring flanges 14. The clamping plates 12 which are located above and below the knob spindle opening extend across the longitudinal slot 3 and clamp the inner or rear face of the main escutcheon plate at opposite sides of the slot. The escutcheon plate is provided at opposite sides of the slot with iiat thickened portions 15 to receive the clamping plates. The auxiliary clamping plate is adapted to be moved on the slot 3 and to be secured in any desired adjustment by the screws 11 and the clamping plates 12. The adjustment of the auxiliary plate will enable the knob spindle opening to be arranged the proper distance from the key hole slot 2 to correspond to the space between the key hole and the knob spindle of the lock to which the escutcheon plate is to be applied.
What is claimed is:
1. An escutcheon consisting of two plates of dilierent sizes, the larger plate being provided with an opening for the key and an elongated opening for the knob spindle of a lock, and the smaller plate being arranged to form an ornamental cover for the elongated opening in the larger plate and having an opening for the passage of the knob spindle and arranged to cover and conceal the elongated opening, clamping plates located above and below the spindle receiving opening of the smaller plate and extending across the elongated opening to engage the larger plate at opposite sides of the elongated opening, and adjusting means arranged centrally of the clamping plates and connecting the same to the smaller plate, whereby the latter is secured in its adjustment.
2. A device of the class described, including an escutcheon plate having a keyhole and provided with a longitudinal slot spaced from the keyhole and having parallel side walls, an auxiliary plate covering and concealing the longitudinal slot and provided with an opening to receive a knob spindle, clamping plates located above and below the spindle receiving opening of the auxiliary plate and extending across the slot and engaging the inner face of the escutcheon plate at opposite sides of the said slot, and fasted ing devices piercing the clamping plate centrally thereof and adjustably connecting the same with the auxiliary plate, whereby the auxiliary plate is clamped in its adjustment.
ln testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
