Ourv invention relates to a new and useful improvement in hair curlers and more particularly to the type of hair curler which is adapted toproduce thecurled or waved effect in the hair, by retainingthe hair properly crimped and clamped for a relatively great length. of time and without the ap'plication of any heat. Our invention. relates more particularly to a hair curler of the character stated, of a very inexpensive and yet of highly eflicient and durable construction, comprising one of a plurality of bowed channel members of called water waves by dampening the hair and then retaining the same crimped within one of a plurality of parallelbowed channel members, by means of a thin resilientretainer band until the hair has dried and set.

For the purpose of illustrating our invention, we have shown in the accompanying drawings forms thereof which are at present preferredby us, since they will give in practice satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to be understood that thevarious instrumentalities of which our invention consists can be variously arranged and or ganized'and that our inventionis not limited to the precise arrangement andv organization of these istrumentalities as herein shown and described; r

The hair waver of our present novel con struction comprises a bowed channel memberl having a longitudinal curvaturecorrespending generally to the curvature of the side of the head and being curved transversely to a suitable depth so as to produce-the desired wave.

One end of the channel-member is provided with an aperture 2, 1n whichone end of a resilient retainer band3 is hingedly secured by an eyelet' l', as shown particularly in Figure 4. a v The resilient retainer band 3is normally straight and'is relatively thin and flexible. 'lhe opposed end of the retainerband 3 carries a clasp member 5 of a generally scroll formation, deflected substantially at a right angle to the body of the band 3, as shown particularly in Figures 4 and 5.

The clasp member 5 is adapted to engage the free edge-6 of the channel member 1 thereby to detachably interengage the clasp i end 5 of the normally straight retainer band 3 with the free end of the bowed channel member 1. r

In the preferred embodiment of our invention, two or more similar channel members 1' are provided with interconnecting wcbn 7, whereby the channel members 1 are retained mspaced and generally parallel relation to each othi-xr, as shown )articul:u.'ly in Figures Ito 3 inclusive.

In tlns preferred embodiment of ourinvention the hair is laid flat across the entire waver, asshown particularly in Figure 1, and the retainer bands 3 arethen deflected and forced into the respectlve channels in succes- 'sion thereby depressing the hair in successive waves into each of said channel members 1 Due to the provision of the relatively thin i flexible retainer bands 3, the hair is exposed to the action of the air, thereby permitting the more rapid drying and setting of the same. r

In order further to facilitate the more rapid drying and setting of the hair, we may perforate the bowed channel members '1' in any suitable manner so as to expose thehair to the action of the air on both sides.

While in the accompanying drawings we have illustrated our novel hair waver as comprising bowed channel members 1, united by relatively narrow spacing webs or members 7, yet instead of providing merely the relatively small spacing members 7 we may unite the successive bowed channels 1 by a continuous web similar to the web 7, but extending the entire length of the bowed members, which construction possesses certain advantages. Thus, for instance, the provision of the relatively small or narrow spacing web 7 affords a certain degree of flexibility between the successive bowed members 1 so as to permit the entire waver more readily to conform to the shape oi the head. A continuous spacing web extending the entire length of the bowed members, on the other hand, would afford a more rigid construction.

Due to the resilient character of the normally straight flat retainer bands 3, hair of varying quantities can be accommodated in each of the bowed channel members 1, because the retainer band 3'possesses sufficient yield ing qualities to accommodate hair of varying quantities-and yet maintain the same pressed tightly into the bowed channel member.

We are aware that the invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from the spirit or essential attributes thereof, and we therefore desire the present embodiment to be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive, reference bein bad: to the a Jended claim rathe'rthan b tothe foregoing description to indicate the scope of the 1nvent1on. In a device of the character stated, a plurality of relatively rigid bowed channel members, each having a hinge aperture at one end thereof, corresponding relatively thin resilient and flez rible retainer bands, each having an eyelet at one endthereof hingedly secured retainer bands will be retained taut within a said eha'nnelmembers, and a web intermediate of adjacent bowed members, retaining the. latter in spaced relation to each other.
