UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CLIVE E. HGCKMEYER, OF LOWELL, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR T0 ZIP-ON MFG. (10.,
. OF LOWEI L, MASSACHUSETTS, A CORPORATION OF MASSACHUSETTS.
LEGGING.
Application filed April 14, 1926. Serial No. 101,893.
This invention relates to leggings generally, and particularly to those having integral' body and leg members designed to be closed and fastened along their outside portions.
The invention has for its object primarily to provide a garment of .this character whichis made of knitted or woven or other materials and which adapts itself to the combination and incorporation therewith of hookless fastening means in such manner as to facilitate the application of the leggings to or removal from the body and legs of the wearer.
A further object of this invention is to provide flexible instep straps for the extremities ofthe leg portions of the leggings, and separable connecting means for the free ends of the instep straps and slide members of the hookless fastening means.
The invention comprises the specific combination, constructlon and arrangement of parts described and claimed in the specification and illustratively companying drawing, in which, Figure 1 is a perspective elevational view of my improved garment, Figure 2 is an enlarged view of the leggings illustrating the extensible belt and other features of the invention; and Figure 3 is a detail view of the instep strap and separable fastening means thereof.
Referring to the drawings, 10 denotes the sections formin the front of the body and leg portions of the leggings. Stitched to the side edges of the back sections 11, the latter sect-ions as well as the front sections 10 being stitched together along lines forming seams directly in the middle of the front and back of the garment. The upper or body opening is formed by turning, the material over on itself to provide a tunnel 12 which constitutes the waist line of the garment. Disposed within the tunnel 12 and attached at opposite endsthereof is an elastic strip which in normal length is substantially shorter than the lengt of the tunnel and since the ends of the strip are attached to points in the tunnel of the back sections 11 corres ending to the side points of the garment it follows that the portions of the back sections will be normally held in shirred position at the waist line.
exemplified in the ac the front sections 10 are the means 17, the other member being disposed in the material adjacent the corner of the back section 11 between the edge thereof forming one side of the opening 13 and the waist line of the leggings.
Each back section 11 in the portion forming the outside of the leg member is open along a line corresponding to the middle of the side, the opening denoted 18, extending from the open foot portion of the member to an elevation short of the crotch of the garment. The edges of the material forming the opening 18 are provided with the interlocking members of suitable hookless fastening means 19, the slide 20 of which is provided with one member of a separable fastening device 21, the other member thereof being disposed at the free end of an instep strap 22, which is preferably formed of a strip of elastic webbing attached at its other end to the inside of the front section 10 directly opposite to the opening 18.
To sum up the construction described in detail in the foregoing paragraphs, the present invention comprehends a leg garment, better known as a pair of leggings, which takes in both a body portion and leg portions, the former having a portion of its waist line extensible and an opening at one side closed by suitable hookless fastening means, and the latter portions having openings disposed in their outer sides and closed by similar hookless fastening means 19, the slides 20 of the latter means being separably connected with the free ends of elastic instep straps 22 which are attached to the inside of the leg portions of the garment, and when in place under the insteps of the wearers shoes not only hold the legging in position, but prevent the leg portions from becoming unfastened, because of the constant pull downwards on the slides 20.
