Description

y 1934. M. MATHESON El AL 1,959,436
TROUSERS Filed June 21, 1933 UT WilKfnoH Patented May 22, 1934 UIED Fries TROUSERS Application June 21, 1933, Serial No. 676,952 In New Zealand July 2, 1932 1 Claim.
This invention relates to trousers of that class wherein it is known to provide the garment, at the waist, with adjustable fasteners, such as straps and buckles, and sometimes also with a 5 waistband broken at the side pockets, the breaks being provided to enable the front portion of the trousers to overlap the rear portion thereof, so
that slack in the latter'may be taken in with a reduced waistband, and so that as the latter is enlarged, increased fullness is given to said rear portion.
The object of the invention is to provide an improvement, whereby the fullness of the rear portion of the trousers may be increased or decreased in conjunction with the enlarging or taking in of the waistband, respectively, without providing breaks in the latter, while also providing for self adjustment of the band to suit the wearer of the garment, and a secure and neat safeguarding means on said band.
According to the invention a pair of trousers is provided with a waistband having elastic sections incorporated therein at the sides of the garment, the front portion of the trousers being se- ;curcd to the waistband in front of the elastic sections and overlapping the rear portion of the trousers which is secured to the waistband at the rear of the elastic sections, said rear portion being slidable between the front portion of the trousers and the side pockets thereof.
The provision of the elastic sections in the waistband renders same self adjusting on the wearer, and permits adjustment of the front and rear trouser portions in relation to one another, while avoiding breaks in the sides of the band.
As a safeguard, and in order to relieve the elastic sections of undue strain when the garment is being worn, adjustable fastening means are provided on the band, said means when in use acting from points in front of the elastic sections to points behind the latter.
The invention is however, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and will be more fully described in conjunction therewith.
Figure 1 being a part perspective view (broken) of one side of a pair of trousers according to the invention, viewed from the inside,
Figure 2 a part perspective view (broken) of the same trousers, viewed from the outside, while Figure 3 is a part sectional plan view taken through the waistband above a side pocket, and
Figure 4 a part sectional plan view taken through the latter.
As illustrated in the drawing, the front portion 1 of the trousers is made to overlap the rear portion 2 thereof at each side of the garment, the
outer edge 3 of each side pocket 3 being attached to the overlapping front portion 1 of the trousers, while the inner edge 3 of each side pocket 3 is attached to the overlapped or rear portion 2 of 60, said garment, the pocket material adjoining said last mentioned edge 3 being folded or pleated so that it extends rearwards of and inside the forward edge of the rear portion 20f the garment to which it is attached.
The waistband 4 has incorporated therein at each side pocket 3, a section 4 of elastic or similar material, each section 4 being attached at its forward end to the waistband portion of the front portion 1 of the trousers, at a point forward of the overlapping edge of said front portion 1, while the rear end of each of said elastic sections 4 is attached to the waistband portion of the rear portion 2 of the trousers, the elastic section 4 and part of said last mentioned waistband portion being concealed by the waistband portion of the front portion 1 of the trousers.
The waistband portion of the front portion of the trousers, is at each side of the latter provided with a strap 5 adapted to be fastened in a buckle s0 6, or be secured by other fastening devices on the waistband of the rear portion of the trousers.
The side pockets 3 are attached along the tops to the front portion 1 of the trousers, and also to the waist lining '7 thereof, which is stitched at 35 each side of the garment, to provide casings 8 in which the elastic sections l of the waistband 4 are capable of being expanded and contracted. The elastic sections l in the waistband 4 preserve the continuity of the latter, and avoid breaks in the waistband at the sides of the trousers, While permitting said band 4 to adjust itself to the wearer without manipulation by the latter, and at the same time automatically increase the fullness of the rear portion 2 of the trousers, or take 5. in slack thereof, as required, the overlapped sides of the rear portion 2 of the garment sliding between the overlapping sides of the front portion 1 and the side pockets 3, the folds or pleats l, in which provide the required slack in the connec- 1 tions between the front and rear portions 1 and 2 respectively of the trousers, to permit of the desired adjustment between said portions.
The side straps 5 and bucklesfi or other fastening means, permit the waistband 4 to be made secure on the wearer, at the required tension, said waistband with the elastic sections 4* therein not being alone relied upon to support the garment, and being relieved of undue strain when the garment is being worn.
We claim: t A pair of trousers having a waistband of at least two parts; front and rear portions of the trousers secured to said waistband, the rear part of the front portion of the trousers overlapping the front part of the rear portion of the trousers at the sides of the trousers; a lining secured to the upper edge of said waistband and to the front and rear portions of the trousers below the waistband to form a casing; elastic portions inserted in the waistband at the side of the trousers between the two parts of the waistband and adapt-
