Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ETHAN O. BENNETT, OF GRAWFORDSVILLE, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN SPRING BED-BOTTOMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 163,627, dated May 25, 1875; application filed November 7, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ETHAN O. BENNETT, of Grawfordsville, in the county of Washington and State of Iowa, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Spring Bed-Bottoms; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation. of a plan view of my spring bed-bottom, and Fig. 2 isa detail view of the same.
This invention has relation to spring bedbottoms which are composed of spiral springs connected together in fours, so that each quadruple arrangement is self-sustaining against lateral displacement. Theimprovement which I have made on this class of spring bed-bottoms consists in uniting the springs in fours by twisting together the wires composing each pair of springs, each pair of springs being composed of a single wire.
Inthe annexed drawings, A A designate longitudinal slats, of any suitable number, which are connected together at or near their ends by means of transverse slats B B, thus constituting the frame of my improved bedbottom. i
To the frame above described I secure, in a suitable manner, a number of spiral springs, G-that is to say, the springs are formed of wire coiled in a conical form, and each pair of springs is formed of a single wire, connected together at the bases or largest diameters of the springs, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The connected wires of each pair of springs in each set of four springs are secured to their fellows by bending the wires, as represented in the drawings, and twisting them together, as indicated by the letters a. By thus twisting the connected portions of the sets of springs I form strong, and at the same time stiff, attachments, which cause a weight brought upon any one of them to act equally on the four springs so connected, and to be resisted equally by such springs.
It will be evident from the above description that the springs forming my improved bed-bottom will not be liable to displacement, as they are tied together in fours.
WVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The spiral springs O 0, formed in pairs of a single wire, the pairs being attached by twisting together their connecting-wires, substantially in the manner as described, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the'above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
ETHAN O. BENNETT. W'itnesscs:
F. SOHWAEBE, HENRY O. SCHWAEBE.
