IMPROVEMENT IN BILL-FILES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent'No. 163,216, dated May 11, 1875; application filed April 1, 1875.
of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view, and Fig. 2 a vertical section.
This invention relates to certain improvements in box-files for papers; and it consists in a box of sheet metal of the width and height of the files of papers, having its front end of the full height of the papers, but its sides and back out down to give more ready access to the face of the papers without taking the same out of the box. To the back portion of the box, upon the inside, a bandspring is attached, which presses the papers to the front part of the box and keeps them always in a vertical position. To the top rear portion of the box a cover is hinged, which cover conforms to the cut sides of the box so as to make the box, when closed, a rectangular parallelogram, the sides of the cover being provided with an extension below the line of junction with the box to make a good fit and exclude dust and dampness.
In the drawing, A represents a sheet-metal box, having its sides cut down obliquely at a, and horizontally at I). The object in cutting the sides of the box at b is to allow the files to project above the sides of the boxes so that they can be readily handled in the box without taking them out, and the object of the obliquely-cut sides is tobring the front of the box up flush with the top of the files, sot-hat in the radial motion of the cover, in closing, the front files are not struck and torn by the cover, as would be the case if the sides of the box were cut down horizontally all around. B is a band-spring upon the inside, which is attached to the back portion of the box and presses against the papers to keep them straight and vertical. 0 is the cover, which is hinged to the box at c, and fastened with a catch, (I. Said cover conforms to the shape of the out edges of the box, so as to make the same a rectangular parallelogram in shape when closed, and has an extended flange, f, which fits upon the outside of the top edges of the box to make a good joint and exclude the dust.
By means of the above-described construction the papers may be readily handled and their faces examined without taking the same from the box, and all dust and dampness excluded.
I am aware of the fact that sheet-metal boxfiles, having a spring upon the inside, have been before constructed, and I therefore confine my invention to the particular construction of the box, having its sides cut away, as shown and described.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is The sheet-metal box A, having its sides out down horizontally at b, and obliquely at a, so as to leave the front of the box flush with the top of the files, and having its cover provided with a laptlange,f, with a spring, B, to hold up the files, all as and for the purpose specified.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 29th of March, 1875.
