UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
COMBINED CIGARETTE HOLDER AND LIGHTER.
Application filed December 19, 1924. Serial No. 756,951.
[his invention relates to improvements in a. combined cigarette holder and lighter which is of such construction as to simulate an automatic pistol.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a combined cigarette holder and lighter of the above mentioned character, .Which may be easily and readily actuated for obtaining a cigarette and permitting the lighting of the same.
A still further object of the invention is to lprovide a combined cigarette holder and lig ter of the above mentioned character, wherein the parts are so arranged as to permit ready access thereto, the device being further simple in construction, inexpensive, strong and durable and furthermore adapted for the purposes for which it is designated.
Other objects and advantages of this invention will become apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals designate like parts throughout the same: a
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the combined cigarette holder and lighter embodying my invention.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view thereof.
Figure 3 is a similar view showing the opposite side.
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken approximately on line 44. of Figure 2, and
Figure '5 is a sectional view taken approximately on line 55 of Figure 1.
In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 1 designates generally my improved combined cigarette holder and lighter which is of-such construction as to simulate an automatic pistol. The handle of the pistol is indicated at 2 and the same is of such construction as to provide a magazine for receiving the cigarette 3 in the manner clearly illustrated in Figures .2 and 3. The barrel of the pistol is shown at 4. The top of the pistol is cut away as illustrated at 5 whereby access to the magazine provided by the handle 2 for inserting or removing cigarettes therefrom as well as obtaining access to the lighting means supported in the barrel may be had. A hinged cover 6 is provided for the open top of the magazine and barrel. A spring catch 7 is provided for locking the hinged cover in a closed position.
A longitudinally extending partition 8 is provided in the forward end of the barrel 4 whereby an enlarged chamber 9 is formed for the purposes hereinafter ,to be more fully described. A vertical partition 10 extends upwardly from the forward end of the handle 2 into the barrel 4 as clearly illustrated in Fi ures 2 and 3 of the drawing.
A tank 11 is adapted to be removably supported within the forward end of the chamber 9 by means of the supporting band 12. The forward end of the tank is internally threaded and a threaded cap 13 provides a closure therefor. The inner end of the tank 9 is provided with an opening 14 at the topthereof for communication with the barrel and adapted to be contained within the tank is an absorbent piece of material which, is saturated with an ignitable fluid. In the present instance I contemplate using cotton which is saturated with benzine. The cotton is placed within the tank and a portion thereof extends upwardly through the opening 14 in the manner as illustrated at 15. A cover for the piece of saturated cotton 15 which extends above the opening 14 is carried by the hinged cover 6 as indicated at 16 in the drawing with reference more particularly to Figure 2. It is obvious from the constructure shown that when the hinge cover 6 is inposition over. the open top of the barrel and magazine, the cover 16 will be disposed over the saturated piece of cotton 15.
A pair of brackets 17 and 18 respectively are secured to the upper portion of the Vertical partition 10 in spaced relation and the same provide a means for supporting the transversely extending shaft 19. One end of the shaft extends through the side of the barrel 4 and a key 20 is associated therewith for the purposes to be presently described.
The cover 6 is cut away as illustrated at 21 so as not to interfere with the key 20. Carried by the intermediate portion of the shaft 19 which is adapted for rotation in the supporting brackets 17 and 18 is the striker wheel 22. The striker wheel is adapted for cooperation with the pyrophoric member 23. The pyrophoric member is supported in the spring carried cap 24; which is secured to the upper portion of the partisuitable opening in the bottom of the barrel 4. A finger guard 28 is associated with the trigger 27 in the manner well known in the art. A coil spring 29 is provided on the shaft 19 on the opposite side of the striker wheel 22 and provides-a means for assisting in the rapid rotation of the shaft and the striker Wheel. The purpose of the key 20 is to wind the spring tightly onthe shaft.
In use, the cover 6 is opened by releasing the latch 7 and a cigarette may be withdrawn from the magazine 2, it being understood of course that the magazine is initially filled with cigarettes. The trigger 27 is then actuated whereby the shaft 19 will rotate and cause the striker wheel 22 to cooperate with the lower end of the pyrophoric member 23 whereby the sparks will ignite the portion of the saturated cotton which extends above'the opening 14 at the top of the inner end of the tank 11 and the cigarette may be lighted with the flame thus obtained. By closing they cover 6, the cover- 16 will smother the flame and the device may be placed in the pocket of the person without any danger of the clothes of the person becoming burnt.
' The provislon of a combined cigarette holder and lighter of the above mentioned character, wherein the same is so constructed as to simulate an automatic pistol and further provides a compact arrangement. The carrying of a box of matches is thereby obviated. The simplicity in which my device is con- 'structed enables the same to be readily and .a casing open at its top, a tank removably supported therein, said tank having an openmg 111 the top thereof, an nflammable member disposed III the tank and havmg a portion thereof extending through the opening,
means for igniting the inflan'unable member comprising a shaft extending transversely through the casing, a striker-wheel carried by the intermediate portion of the shaft, a pyrophoric member supported in the casing and adapted for engagement with the striker wheel, a ratchet wheel on said shaft on one side of the striker wheel, a manually actuated trigger pivotally supported in the casing and having one end thereof extending outwardly of the casing, a pawl associated with the other end of the trigger for engage ment with the ratchet wheel to rotate the shaft and the striker wheel, a coil spring associated with the shaft on the opposite side of the striker wheel, a winding key on the outer end of said shaft, a cover for the open top of the casing, and an auxiliary cover carried thereby adapted to extend over the portion of the inflammable member protruding from the opening in the tank when the first mentioned cover is positioned over the top of the casing.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
