LIGHTING FIXTURE.

The present invention relates to a bracket type of lighting fixture and more particularly to a fixture adapted for ready attacliment to walls, furniture and the like and provided with socket attaching means so as to be readily installed. This type of fixture is particularly adapted for installations where permanent wall fixtures can not be employed and is supplied with means for several types of attachment so that it can be employed in fitting up rooms where permanent fixtures are already in place but where it is desirable to have wall brackets for the time being or for particular occasions.

The annexed drawings and the following description set forth in detail certain mechanism embodying the invention, Such disclosed means constituting, however, but one of various mechanical forms in which the principle of the invention may be used.

In said annexed drawings Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the fixture; Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same; Fig. 3 is a sectional view showing the fixture as applied to a bed post or the like; Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line 4 4- of Fig. 2; and Fig. 5 is a fragmentary perspective view showing a detail of construction.

The present fixture comprises an attaching plate 1 having an outwardly ext-ending curved socket holding arm 2 carrying the usual bulb socket 3. The plate 1 and arm r 2 are integrally formed from a single sheet of metal, the arm being rolled to form a cylindrical tube open at the bottom while the socket holding end is in the form of an inverted cup 4 having a centra-l aperture 5. The socket is secured in place by a bushing 6 having an extension 7 passing through the aperture and held in place in the lamp socket by means of a set screw 8. Thus the bracket is formed from a single sheet of metal and the necessary stiffness is obtained by rolling the arm into tube like shape. The socket is provided with the usual extension cord 10 and base plug 11 for attachment to a wall outlet or other socket and the cord 10 is fitted within the open tubular arm, being held in place by ears 12 formed integrally with the arm and bent Serial No. 679,014

over the cord after it is inverted in the tube. rlhere are two such ears shown but the number may of course be increased for certain conditions.

The present fixture may be used as a supplementary wall bracket or side light and for such use the plate is provided with screw holes 15 through which attaching screws may be inserted. Where it is desired to attach the device to the back of a piece of furniture, a U-shaped spring` clip 16 is provided which is attached to the back of the plate by a screw 17 passing through one of the screw holes 15, a screw headed bolt 18 being inserted in the other hole and extending through a slot 2O and being provided with a wing nut 19 for clamping the clip tightly to the piece of furniture as best shown in Fig. 2.

It may also be desirable to attach the device to a post such as a bed post or the like and for this purpose, the plate is provided with one or more pairs of slots 21 adapted to receive straps 22 which may be fastened around the post 23 as illustrated in Fig. 3. The wires or extension cord may be connected to any suitable source of current supply but preferably the plug 11 will be connected to a base board outlet or any convenient lamp socket.

The entire device is a single piece with the exception of the standard lamp socket which is attached thereto, thus facilitating manufacture and eliminating joints and the like. The device is a supplementary fixture adapted for universal attachment and provided with the necessary extension cord and plug so that it may be easily attached and connected wherever desired. The various attaching features are easily mounted or removed so that the bracket can be adapted to the many uses without difficulty.

Other modes of applying the principle of our invention. may be employed instead of the one explained, change being made as regards the mechanism herein disclosed, provided the means stated by the following claim or the equivalent of such stated means be employed.
