MAX HERSKOVITZ, `OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS; WILLIAM IBEIR'SKOVITZ ANDl CHARLES WEINFELD, EXECUTORS OF SAID MAX HERSKOVITZ, DECEAI'SED, ASSIGNORS TO PEERLESS LIGHT COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF MAINE.
4 f ELECTRIC-LIGHTING FIXTURE AND LAMP SOCKET THEREFORJ,
Applieation mea February 2,1924. serial No. camisa.,
ThisI invention relates lto electricv lighting fixture and lamp socket therefor and its principal object vis to Simplify the construction of lighting fixture members, and to minimize the cost` of production thereof. ,f Another 'object ,is -to simplifyv the work. of parts, and the wiring thereof and to otherwlse improvel thereon. With these objects and advantages in view this invention consists in the several novel fea-v tures of construction, arrangement and combination of parts, hereinafter fully set forth and claimed. The invention is clearly illustrated inthe drawing accompanying this specification, in which i Fig. 1 is a side l elevation of an electric lighting fixture `embodying a simple form of the present invention, and a supporting member to whichr-the fixture is secured; Fig. 2 is -a central, vertical section therethrough; Fig. 3- is a central, vertical section through a slightly modified form of the invention and Fig. 4 is a central, vertical section through a second modfied form of the invention. v
Referring to said drawing and first to Figs. 1 and 2, the reference character 5 designates a bracket "arm, in the form of a single casting having 'a housing 6 at its -upper end and a channel or passage 7 leading from the cavity 8 of the houslng to its end 9. At said end 9, the arm is threaded internally and formed with barbs 10. In vthe threaded end of the arm is secured a threaded nipple 11 and on said nipple is a nut 12. One of the uses of the present bracket is to illuminate mirrors, consoles,
picture `frames, beds and other articles and the bracket is secured thereto by passing the nipple 11 through ahole 13 in the frame 14 and screwing the nut 12 up against the back ofthe frame, thereby clamping the frame between 'the end of the arm 5 4and `nut 12. The barbs 10, biteinto the frame and positively prevent the bracket from turning thereon.
Secured `in thevcavit or recess 8 of the housing 6, is an electric socket member 15 which has conductorcords 16, permanently secured toits contact pieces 17, 18. In wir ing the bracket arm 5, the wires are inserted through the cavity 8, and pushed out through the end -of the passage 7, and the /socket member is inserted into the cavity 8.
` A set screw 6i threaded in the wall of the housing 6, bears against the socket member 15 and secures it in place in the housing.
The socket 'member 15 may comprise the usual internal or interior members of a lamp socket, vsuch as the threaded shell 17, and the center contact piece 18 secured to the porce-` .lain support 19.- The conductor cords 16, in this case, are solderedv to the contact pieces and the contact pieces, porcelain support and ends of the conductor cords are secured in a paper case 20 by cement or the like 21. These assembled interior parts of ka lamp socket I shall designate as a socket in`` terior. This construction provides an exceedingly cheap-,yet'practical durable and` approved socket.
f' Formerly ingtorder to wire a fixture` in` which the electric socket was contained in a housing it was necessary torhave a nipple on the inside of the housing and to use an electric socket made up of several separable parts, and the fixture would necessarily have to consist of several pieces. All of this was made necessary to avoid twisting the wires when securing the electric socket in place in the housing. -The labor and time required for assembling and wiring such fixtures, made the cost .thereof more than twice that of the present fixture.
In the form Shown in Fig. 3 a sheet metal housing 22 is shown, which has a contracted end portion 23 formed with an internal neck 24. The'neck is internally ythreaded whereby-the casing 22 may be secured upon a threaded nipple 25 of a lighting fixture, and a setrscrew 26 is threaded in the reduced part 23 and arranged to impinge against said nipple 25. The interior 15 is secured in the casing 22 by a/set screw 6 as in the preferred form.
In the form illustrated in Fig. 4 a housing 22b and socket interior 15 of reduced-size is shown attached to a threaded nipple 25", of a bracket or other fixture arm, and locked in placetby a set screw 26.A This form ofthe lnvention is intended principally for use 1n connection with the candle type of light. In this case the casing 22" is of much less diameter than the casing of the `form shown in Fig. 3, and the contracted part is omitted, the inturned neck 24 being formed directly upon the lever and. 9i the Wall af the Ces ing. Otherwise, the construction of the casing and lam socket may be substantially the same as t at illustrated in 'F ig. 3. The socket interior 15 is secured in the housing by a set screw 6a as in the other forms shown. The screw 6a holds the socket interior at any place in the housing and prevents it from turning therein. The screw 26 impinges against the nipple and prevents thehousing from turning thereon. These screws are ac, cessible from the exterior of the housing which makes it easier to secure thel parts together.
The forms illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4 function in the same manner as those shown in Figs. 1 and 2, so far as the wiring is concerned, and in addition thereto this form may be assembled with standard forms of fixtures, brackets and the like, with the same ease as the form shown in Figsl and 2.
More or less variation of the exact details of construction is possible without departing from the spirit of this invention; I desire, therefore, not to limit myself to the exact form of the construction shown and described, but intend, in the following claims, to p oint out all of the invention disclosed herein.
ing away from said shell and center Contact piece, and a set screw threaded in the Wall of said housing andv impinging against said paper case.
MAX HERSKOVITZ.
