COMBINATION ASH AND GARBAGE RECEIPIACLE.

My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in a garbage and ash receptacle and'hasfor its object the provision of a garbage and ash receptacle which will be simple in structure, economical of manufacture and durable and efficient in use.

Another object of the invention is the provision of a. garbage and ash receptacle of the class described having doors formed thereon provided with catches adapted for locking the door closed, the structure of the catches and engaging members being such as to afford a maximum wear while, at the same time, cheap and easily installed.

Another object of the invention is the provision of a garbage and ash receptacle so constructed as to be easily and quickly emptied.

Another object of the invention is the provision of a combined garbage and ash receptacle having an overflow communicating with the garbage and ash compartments, so as to permit an excess of liquids deposited in the garbage container to flow into the ash receptacle.

Other objects of the invention will appear hereinafter.

The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

As shown in the drawings, in the form shown in Fig. 1 there is provided a combina- I tion garbage and ash receptacle made preferably of concrete which may be suitably reinforced, if desired, the reinforcement being omitted in the drawings. 7

This cont-alner comprlses a rear wall 9 and a base 10, having suitable side walls and a front wall 11. Formed in the front wall 11 are openings 12 and 13. Projecting downwardly from, adjacent the center of the upper wall 14, slightly inclined to the vertical, is a partition wall 15, terminating at its lower end in a more abruptly inclined portion 16, which connects with a base 17, the forward end of which is enlarged and inclined upwardly toward the opening 13, as at 18. There is thus provided a compartment 19, adapted for the reception of garbage and a larger compartment 20 adapted for the reception of ashes and other refuse. As Clearly seen in Fig. l, the upper wall 14 slopes to the rear and the front slightly from adjacent the center, so as to provide a suitable watershed. Supported on the body of the structure by having one end thereof projected into the material are knuckles 23 and 24, through which are projected pins 23 and 24, which pass through knuckle-s 24 and 23 formed on the arms 25 and 26, which are secured to a door 27 used as a closure for the opening 1.2. It will be notedthat the wall 11 is inclined to the vertical so that the door 27 is inclined. A similar door 28 is similarly mounted upon the wall 11 to serve as a closure for the opening 13. These doors are constructed of similar material and in similar manner, so that a descrlptlon of one will suffice for both. As shown in Fig. 3,

the wall 11 is provided with a V-shaped 'slidably in suitable guides 31 and 32, which are mounted upon the door 27 is a bolt 33, upon which is mounted a suitable handle 34. Embedded in the wall 11 is an angle iron 35 having one end 36 thereof projecting outwardly from the wall 11 and provided with a suitable opening 37 for receiving the bolt 33. The lower end 38 of the door is also diagonally cut and adapted to seat in a V- shaped notch 39 formed in the wall 11. The

upper wall 14 is provided with an opening 40, communicating with the compartment 20, a suitable door .41 being provided as a closure for this opening 40, the door This arrangement. is pro 41 having a handle 42. Upon swinging the door out of closing position, the ashes, or other refuse, may be dumped into the compartment 20. An opening 43 is provided which communicates with the compartment 19, this opening being provided with a suit able door at having the handle 45 which forms with the main body ist of the door a triangle. This handle 4:5 serves as an abutment for the door 11, when it is swung bacle wardly into open position and also serves as an abutment for the door 44, this handle engaging the door 1-1, when the door Kid-l is swung to open position, while the door fl-l is closed.

The wall 1? and the portion 16 are inclined in the manner shown, so as to normally tend to shove the garbage in the compartment 19 to a forward. position in the coi'npartment. The inclined enlarged portion 18 serves as an anchor for the angle iron positioned therein and also permits the one removing the garbage from. the com partment to easily remove the garbage therefrom by a shovel, or the like.

Formed in the enlarged portion 18 is an opening 46 which communicates with the compartment 20, so that an excess amount of liquid in the compartment 15.) will be allowed to pass into the compartment 20 and cannot overflow through the opening 13, so as to mar the appearance of the receptacle from the outside. The enlarged portion 21 also serves as an anchor for the angle iron 3? and facilitates the removal of the cinders or other refuse from the compartment 20.

In the modified form shown in Fig. 1-, I have provided a combination ash and garbage receptacle having an ash compartment and a garbage compartment mounted on the same level. This receptacle comprises a main body 4-7, having the partition wall 48 extending transversely thereof to provide a. pair of compartments 4-9 and 50. Each of these compartments is provided with an opening in the upper wall having a suitable door 51 and 42 with handles 51 and 52. The forward wall is also provided with openings having the doors 53 and 5a with the latching means already described. The doors and 54: are mounted in the V- shaped notch, as already described, the structure and mounting of these doors being the same as the structure and mounting of the doors E27 and 28.

With a combination receptacle of this class formed as described, a durable structure is presented and one which is very eflicient in use on account of the specific structure described in detail.

Vhile I have illustrated and described the preferred form of structure, I do not wish to limit myself to the precise form of structure shown but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

A receptacle of the class described, comprising a main body portion having walls enclosing a compartment; a secondary compartment formed within said walls, said secondary compartment having a rear wall inclined to the vertical throughout the major llll portion of its length andterminating adjacent its lower end in a more abruptly inclined portion, said abruptly inclined portion terminating in a base extending to the front wall of said receptacle; an enlargement on said base adjacent said wall, said wall being provided with an opening positioned above said base, the upper surface of said enlarged portion inclined upwardly and outwardly from the upper surface of said base to said opening, said enlargement having a vertically extending opening formed therethrough for permitting the passage of liquids through said enlargement into said main compartment.

A receptacle of the class described comprising a boxlike structure having enclosing walls and provided with an enlarged compartment and a comparatively small compartment, said small compartment being determined by walls of said boxlike structure and a partition projecting thereacross, projecting downwardly from the upper wall thereof at an incline to the vertical, the lower end of said partition being more abruptly inclined and terminating in a base positioned above the bottom of said 'boxlike structure a substantial distance; an enlargement on said base, adjacent one of the walls of said boxlike structure and having its upper surface inclined upwardly and outwardly toward an opening formed in said wall, said enlargement having a vertically extending opening formed therein for permitting the passage of liquids from said comparatively small compartment into said larger compartment upon the raising of the liquids in said comparatively small compartment to a certain height.

5. A receptacle of the class described comprising a box-like structure having enclosing walls and provided with an enlarged compartment and a comparatively small compartment, said small compartment being determined by the side walls, front wall and top wall of said box-like structure and a partition projecting thereacross, 'proj ecting downwardly from the upper wall thereof at an incline to the vertical, the lower end of said partition terminating at a base positioned above the bottom wall of said boxlike structure a substantial distance, the top wall of saidbox-like structure being downwardly inclined at opposite sides of the juncture of said inclined partition therewith and provided with an opening at each side of said partition, one of said openings communicating with said enlarged compartment and one conmiunic-ating with said comparatively small vcompartment, the front wall of said box-like 7 structure having a pairof openings, each communicating with one of said compartments; and a closure for each of said openings.
