Description
Aug. 4, 1931. c. A. BENJAMIN STUB AND ASH RECEPTACLE FOR AUTOMOBILES Filed Nov. 15. 1950 Patented Aug. 4, 1931 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE STUB' AND ASH RECEPTACLE FOR AUTOMOBILES Application filed November 13, 1930. Serial No. 495,406.
The object of this invention is to provide a receptacle for cigar and cigarette ashes and stubs, adapted to be carried by a door of a closed car body, receive and confine ashes and stubs when the door is closed, and permit the discharge thereof by gravity outside the body when the door is opened.
Of the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification,
Figure 1 shows in perspective a portion of the interior of a closed car body including a door shown in a closed position, and a receptacle embodying the invention carried by the door.
Figure 2 is a section on line 22 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the receptacle, parts thereof being separated.
Figure 4shows in perspective a portion of the exterior of the car, the door being opened to permit the discharge of refuse outside the body.
The same reference characters indicate the same parts in all of the figures.
The door 12 of a closed car is hollow below the window 13 and provided with the usual enclosed space 14 between its inner and outer sides.
My improved receptacle is attachable to the inner side of the hollow portion of the door and is constructed as next described. 15 designates a receiving portion or bowl 1 having a flat back formed to bear on the inner side of the door and provided with means for attachment thereto. For example, screw holes 16 may be formed in the back adapted to receive attaching screws.
17 designates an inclined chute portion formed to extend diagonally from the receiving portion 15 through an upper opening 18 in the inner side of the door into the space 14.
19 designates an elongated chute portion joined to the inclined portion 17, and formed to extend downwardly within the space 14:.
20 designates a delivering portion joined to the delivering portion 19 and formed to extend through a lower opening 21, in the inner side of the door, and provided with an outlet 22, and with means for attachment to the door.
I prefer to embody the attaching means in a face plate 23 surrounding the outlet and adapted to bear on the inner side of the door,
said plate having screw holes 24 for the reccption of attaching screws.
25 designates a movable closure, preferably a door, connected by a hinge 26 with the face plate, and adapted to close the outlet 22. The closure'niay be releasably confined in a close position by a detent means such as a spring catch 29 and a keepergtherefor formed by a slot 28.
The delivery portion 20 includes an inclined deflector 29 arranged to guide refuse to the outlet 22.
It will be seen by reference to Figure 4 that when the door 12 and closure 25 are opened the contents of the receptacle are guided by the deflector 29 and discharged by gravity outside the automobile body.
The receiving portion 15 may be provided with a removable funnel 30 for the purpose stated by my Patent No. 1,772,176, dated August 5, 1930.
I claim:
1. A stub and ash receptacle attachable to a hollow door of an automobile body and comprising a receiving end portion having a back formed to bear on the inner side of the door, and provided with means for attachment thereto; an inclined chute portion formed to extend diagonally from the receiving portion through an upperopening in the inner side of the door into the interior thereof, an elongated chute portion joined to the inclined portion and formed to extend downwardly within the door, and a delivery end portion joined to the elongated portion 9 and formed to extend through a lower opening in the inner side of the door, and provided with an outlet and with means for attachment to the door, and a movable closure for said outlet, the lower end of the elongated chute portion having an inclined deflector, the arrangement being such that when the door'and closure are opened, the contents of the receptacle are guided by said deflector and discharged by gravity outside the automobile body.
2. A. stub and ash receptacle as specified by claim 1, the delivering end portion being provided with a face plate surrounding said outlet and adapted to bear on the inner side of the door, the closure being hinged to the face plate, said plate constituting an element of receptacle attaching means and a seat for said closure.
In testimony whereof I have afiixed my signature.
CHARLES A. BENJAMIN.
