PATENT IMPROVEMENT IN PAILS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 159,792, dated February 16, 1875; application filed November 14, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ORB-IN S. CAMP, of Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Pails; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of a perspective view of my pail. Fig. 2 is a vertical central sectional view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a sectional detail view.
This invention has relation to improvements in that class of tin-lined wooden-bodied pails and buckets for which Letters Patent of the United States were issued to me, bearing date on September 12, 1871, and reissued November 28, 1871, numbered 4,650.
The nature of the invention and improvement consists in an annular recess turned out of the upper edge of the wooden case, wherein theuppcr or rim hoop of the case is secured by driving rivets through the said rim, and clinching them upon the inside of the wooden case, whereby the said hoop is notliable to become accidentally detached from violent contact with outside objects. It also consists in an car, which is rigidly secured over the heads of the securing-rivets to the said rim-hoop, whereby the ends of the rivets are concealed and a sightly appearance given to the upper part of the pail, as will be hereinafter more fully explained.
In the annexed drawings, A designates the wooden case, and B the metallic lining or cup, of my improved pail. This lining B has a projecting flange, 1), extending horizontally outward from its upper edge, which rests upon and is finally soldered to an inwardly-projecting flange, c, of a rim-hoop, O. This hoop is of right cylindrical form, and in order to conveniently apply it to the outwardly-flaring staves of the case, the upper ends thereof are turned off to a depth and width sufficient to receive the hook. A recess, 01, is thus formed having its vertical sides at right angles to the horizontal plane, and the hoop, when placed therein, will have its lower edge flush with the sides of the case A. This hoop is secured in its recess by means of rivets 4", which are driven from the outside through the hoop, and then clinched upon the inside of the case A. The cup or lining is then placed within the case, and its flange b is soldered to the flange 0 of hoop G, as shown in detail, Fig. 3.
With a view to concealing the heads of the rivets, the ears E of a bail, F, are soldered over them, as shown, thereby giving to the upper part of the pail a complete and handsome finish, which could not otherwise be obtained.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The right cylindrical hoop O, recessed into the upper edge of the tin-lined case A, and secured therein by means of rivets r, driven th rough the said hoop and clinched upon the inside of the case, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the rim 0, of the ears F, rigidly soldered to the said rim over the heads of the rivets r, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
ORRIN S. CAMP.
