Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY S. REYNOLDS, OF GREEN POINT, NEW YORK.
lM PROVEMENT IN COAL-HODS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 206,614, dated July 30, 1878; application filed July 5, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY S. REYNOLDS, of Green Point, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Goal-Bods, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawing, in which Figure 1 represents a side view of my hod, partly in section. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of a portion thereof on a larger scale than in the previous figure.
Similar letters in dieate eorrespondin g parts.
The object of this invention is to provide a firm connection between the base and the bottom of a coal-hod: and it consists in the combination, with a body and base having interlocked heads at their joined edges, of a bottom having a flange flaring within the body and a projecting bead at its lower edge, which extends under the interlocked beads of the base and body.
In the drawing, the letter A designates the base. 13 is the body, and O is the bottom, of my hod, each of which parts is constructed of sheet metal, and provided with a bead, a, b, and 0, respectively. The bead a of the base is formed at its top edge, and projects inwardl y therefrom, while the bead b of the body is located at the lower edge thereof, and constitutes a groove to receive the upper outwardly-projecting edge of the base.
The bottom 0 has an upwardly-projecting rim or flange, d, and at the junction of this rim or flange with the bottom I arrange the bead c.
To unite the parts of my hod, the upper outward ly-projectin g edge of the base A is sprung into the groove 1) of the body, and the bottom 0 is so adjusted that its bead c catches beneath the bead a of the base, as shown, when the rim or flange d of the bottom is riveted, as at e, or otherwise secured to the body.
By this means the upper edge of the base A is held in an interlocked condition with the groove 1) of the body, and a very strong and firm joint is produced.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a eoal-hod, the combination, with the body and hollow base having interlocked beads at their joined edges, of a bottom having a flange flaring upward within the body and a projecting bead at its lower edge, which extends under the interlocked beads of the base and body, substantially as described.
2. In a coal-hod, the combination of the body B, having at its lower edge the outwardly-projectin g coneavo-convex bead I), the base A, having at its upper edge the inwardlyprojecting concavo-couvex bead a, interlocking with the bead of the body, and the bottom C, having the upwaially-flarin g flange d and the outwardly-prqiectin bead 0, extending under the interlocked beads of the body and base, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing l have hereunto set my hand and seal this 28th day of June, 1878.
HENRY S. REYNOLDS. [L. 8.]
