Hams-Fasteners.
N0,157,750, Patented Dec.15,1874.

THE GRAPE": CO. PHOTD'LITHJS iG-l PARK PLAEE.N.Y-
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE.
RICHARD GUSTIN, OF TROY, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN HAME-FASTENERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 157,750, dated December 15, 1874; application filed May 4, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, RICHARD GUsTIN, of Troy, in the county of Bradford and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hame-Fasteners and the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings making a p art of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents an edge view of all the parts, showing the two ring-plates and the lever-latch and holder. Fig. 2 shows an insideview of the latch-plate. Fig. 3 shows the link-plate or take-up strap. Fig. 4 shows the latch-plate with the lever-latch open for coupling together.
My invention relates to metallic hamefastenings; and it consists in the construction of the hinged lever latch, combined with the two right and left ring-plates.
To enable others to make and use my invention, I will describe it more fully, referringto the drawings and to the letters marked thereon.
The ring-plates A and B may be made of wrought or cast metal, and by the rings a and b are hinged or otherwise secured to the lower ends of the hame. The plate A is provided with a notch or recess, 0, and an enlarged circular plate, D, and projecting lips e and 11, near its outer end upon which plate I) is pivoted a latch, E, on the inside of which is a projecting portion, 6, to fit into the recess 0 when the latch is closed. ()n the projection e is a projecting hook, F, of oval form, which forms a button or catch to hitch the other ring-plate B to when the hame is put on and secured for draft. The ring -plate Bis provided with a series of holes, ff, through it, corresponding in shape with the head of the hook-button F onto which it is hooked, while the latch-lever E is opened and thrown back in a line, as shown in Fig. 4, when the lever is again returned to its position 011 the face of the plate A, and the projection e is firmly seated in the recess 0, and the heme is securely fastened.
The advantages of my hame-fastener are, that they are strong, cheap, and durable, easily operated, and perfectly safe from unhitching of themselves.
What I claim as myinvention is The combination of plate A, having circu-- lar extension D, and recess 0, the lever E, hinged to plateA and carrying button F, and the perforated plate B, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe my name.
RICHD. GUSTIN.
