Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEroE.
ROBERT T. CHAPMAN, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
"IMPROVEMENT IN BRACELETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 217,061, dated Julyl, 1879; application filed May 1, 15579.`
To all whom it may concern: A
p Beit known that I, ROBERT T. CHAPMAN, of Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bracelets and I do herebydecl are that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to bracelets; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of a safety-fastening for the same, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In `order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in whichl Figure l is a perspective view of my brace let, and Figs. 2, 3, and 4 are details of the same. l y
The bracelet is made'in two parts, A and B,
,hinged together at ct in any of the known and usual ways. In the outer or free end of the part A is formed aloop, C, with shoulders at b b; and in the outer or free end of the part B is attached a plate, D, having a spring-catch, F, secured to it. These parts are so arranged that in closing the bracelet the plate D and catch F will enter the loop C, and when the bracelet is completely closed the catch F will come against the inside of the shoulders b and hold the bracelet in the closed position. To this construction of the bracelet-fastening I, however, lay no claim, as I am aware the same is old.
At the extreme free end of the part A of the bracelet is formed a central projection, d, through which is passed a small screw, e, having a fancy or ornamental head, I. The inner end of the screw e is upset or otherwise made in such a manner that it cannot be entirely removed from the bracelet. 4
The spring-catch F has an inwardly-projecting tongue, h, andl in the extreme free end of i the part B of the bracelet is a cut-out, as shown at i., to correspond with the projection d, said projection iitting in said cut-out when the bracelet is closed.
When' the bracelet is closed, by screwing down the screw c said screw will press on the tongue hY of the Spring-catch or snap F, and the bracelet can be pulled apart. Before closing the bracelet the head and screw are to be turned backward a little. Then press the parts together and the bracelet is fastened securely. This forms a safety-fastening, as the bracelet cannot be opened except by `first turning down the screw on the snap.
Other bracelets may be opened in many ways; but it has heretofore been necessary to provide them with chains to guard against their becoming accidentallyA opened. my invention there is no need of chains, the bracelet. being perfectly secure Without the same. y
`Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is i The combination, with the hinged bracelet A B, of the loop C, with shoulders b, the plate D, with spring-catch or snap F, and the screw e, with head I, all constructed and arranged to operate substantially as and for the purposes hereinset forth.
In testimony' that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ROBT. T. CHAPMAN.
