TRACE-BUCKLE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 350,778, dated October 12I 1886.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, Howann T. SiiroNs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cambridge, in the county of Guernsey and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trace-Buckles, and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, which forni a part of this specification,-

Figure I is a perspective view of my improved trace-buckle, showing it attached to a tug and trace. Fig. 2 is a'longitudinal sectional view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the parts composing the buckle.

My invention has relation to buckles, especially adapted for trace-buckles, and it consists in the improved construction and coinbination of parts of the saine, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

In-the accompanying drawings, the letter A indicates the tug, the end of which is doubled, as usual, to form the transverse eye B, and C is the trace. The forward cross-bar, D, of the tug portion of the buckle is secured in the transverse eye of the tug, and this tug portion E consists, furthermore, of two outwardly-eurved side pieces, F F, and a plate, G, which connects the rear ends of' the side pieces, and which is provided upon its inner side with an inwardly-projecting pin or lug,H.

rlhe locking portion I of the buckle consists of a frame having an aperture, J, through which passes the rear end of the tug portion of the buckle, and which has at both sides notches or recesses K, for the easy accommodation of the side pieces of the tug portion,

' and the rear side of this aperture has a notch or recess, Il, at its middle, into which the end of the lug fits when the buckle is closed. Vide bails M and N project from the upper and lower side piece of the locking portion for the attachment of the back and belly bands, and a bail, O, projects from the rear end of the locking portion, and is curved slightly outward, allowing the billet of the trace to pass through it. The end piece of this bail is provided with a smaller bail, P, to which the strap from the breeching in a set of double harness may be attached. The billet of the trace is provided with. the usual perforations, Q, into which the lug may tit. now be seen that when thc end plate and the curved side pieces of the tug portion are inserted through the aperture in the locking portion the billet ot' the trace may be .in serted through the bail at the rear end of the locking portion and under the end plate of the tug portion, where its perforation may engage the lug and be held by the saine, the end of the billet passing above the forward end piece of the locking portion, and being secured in a box or loop, R, upon the tug. The billet of the trace will bear outward upon the rear end of the locking portion and inward upon the forward end of the same, and the notched end of the aperture of the locking portion willthus have the edges of the notch bearing upon the sides ot" the inner end of thelug, preventing the perforation in the trace from becoming disengaged from the lug.

It follows that this buckle may be used for other purposes besides as a tracebuckle, and that when it is not used as a trace-buckle the bails upon the sides and end of the locking portion may be dispensed with; or other bails more suitable for their special purposes may be added.

Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United StatesW 1L. In a buckle composed of two separable parts, the combination of one portion, having curved side bars anda straight end piece,and an end plate having an inwardly-projecting lug, with the other portion having an aperture for the passage of the end plate and the ends ol' the curved side pieces, and haviuga notch in the outer side of its aperture for the reception of the projecting lug, and having a bail curved slightly up at its outer end, as and for thepurpose shown and set forth.

2. In a buckle composed of two parts, the combination of a tug portion having its end 1t will IOO bar adapted to be secured to the tug, and having outwardly-curved side pieces and an end plate at their rear ends provided with an inwardiy-projeoting lug, With a locking portion having an aperture for the passage of the end plate and formed with notches at the sides for the curved side pieces of the tug portion, and- With a notch in its rear side to receive the end of the lug, and having Wide bails at its upper 1o and lower sides, and an outwardly-curved bail vat its rear end, formed with a bail upon its' end piece, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
