WILLIAM WEBER, 0E cHIcAe-o, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN SAW SETTING AND FILING DEVICES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent To all whom it may concer-n:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM WEBER, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements .in Saw-Setting and Saw-Filing Devices, of which improvements the followingA is a full, clear, and exact description, which will enable others skilled in the art to which my invention relates to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this speciflcation, in which- Figure 1 represents a side view; Fig. 2, side view; Fig. 3, top view; Fig. 4, end view; Fig.
` 5, longitudinal section; Fig. 6, cross-section;
Fig. 7, perspective.
My invention relates to saw-clamps, to be used for filing and setting band and scroll saws; and the greatest diicultya band or scroll sawyer has in doing good smooth work is rin not having the proper tools for filing and setting his saw. Ordinary vises will not hold a narrow saw; consequently it is impossible to file and set them true. These faults are overcome in vmy invention by means of the rest and supplemental jaws, which I will proceed to explain.
In the accompanying drawing, A represents y j the clamp-frame, made of suitable material,
and, for convenience, made in two pieces, the joint being atrone corner of the bottom plate, as seen in Figs. 4 and 6. B and 'B' are the jaws, used in the ordinary manner for clamping saws. My improvements consist, in part, in combining with each of these jaws a supplemental jaw, O, having the dovetail a upon the bottom, sliding in dovetail-grooves a! in the top of the jaws B and B'. These supplemental jaws are for the purpose of setting the saw, the inside edges `being beveled for that purpose; and are only one-half as long as the jaws B and B', and are capable of being moved laterally the length of the clamp, independent of each other; A', guide and rest for governing the saw in regard to the portion of the same above the level of the jaws B and B'. This rest .has two arms, b. These extend out in a circular manner to the inside of the frame A, where a corresponding slot, b', receives a screw-bolt, which passes through the slot b' inthe frame A, and screws firmly into No. 155,8 [9, dated October 13, 1874 application n'led June 2, 1874.
the arms b, the outer ends of the bolts being provided with thumb-screws d'. When the rest is in the right position, the thumb-screws are tightened. The shoulder, coming in contact with the surface of the frame, holds the rest in a firm manner. When a wider saw is placed in the clamp, the thumb-screws d' are loosened, and the rest moved down until the teeth are in the right position, when they are again tightened as before; D, bolt, passing through the vcenter of the clamp A, and between the ends of clamp-levers D'. of the bolt D is provided with a cam-lever, D", and the opposite end with thumb-screw d, the same having a shoulder wide enough to prevent the ends of the clamp-levers D' from passing by when the cam-lever D" is forced down in the act of tightening the clamp upon the saw. The operation of my invention is as follows: The saw is placed in the clamp in the ordinary manner, the back resting upon the rest A'. The thumb-screws d' are loosened, and the' rest moved in the proper position, when they are again tightened, which holds the rest rm. The cam-lever D" is then forced down, the cam operating upon the frame A upon one side, and the shoulder of the thumb-screw d upon the inside ends of the clamp-levers D' upon the opposite side, the fulcrum of the levers being upon the frame at c, and the outer ends held by the bolts F. By this system of clamping, the pressure is the same the whole length of the clamp, the saw being held firmly and not allowed to spring in some places while it is firm in others. When the saw is secured in this manner,- the supplemental jaws are moved, one at each end, upon their respective sides, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3. lhe operator then takes a punch and hammer and The jaws are then moved to opposite positions, and the teeth set over the same. When this is accomplished, both supplemental jaws are placed at one end, and that portion of the saw that has been set iiled. The jaws are then moved to the opposite end, and the remainder led. The saw is then loosened and moved along the length of the clamp, and the same operation performed until the work is accomplished. If it is thought more conven- One end j sets the teeth against the supplemental jaw.`
ient or expeditious, the supplemental jaws may be removed altogether.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, `Quid. desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a. saw setting and filing device, the clamp-levers D', in combination with the camlever D", for clamping a saw, as set forth.
2. The combination, in a saw setting and filing device, of the jaws B and B', provided with the doveteil-grooves a', rest A', -and the supplemental jaws C C, provided with the dovetail a, substantially as and for the plu'- pose specified and described.
The above specification signed by lne this 25th day of May, 1874.
