Description

G. R. HUFP. I Saw-Filing Machine.
No. 219,266. Patented-Sept. 2, I879.
WITNESSES:
j INVENTOR:
- TORNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE;
' GEORGE E. HUFF, OF TOMAH, WISCONSIN.
IMPROVEMENT IN SAW-FILING MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 219,266, dated September 2, 1879; application filed March 15, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. HUFF,-of Tomah, in the county of Monroe and State of Wisconsin, have invented a newand useful Improvementin Saw-FilingMachines, of which the following is a specification.
Figure 1 is a top view of my device. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same, the file-holder and file being shown in cross-section through the line .00 m, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a cross-section of the same. I
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish an improved device for use in filing saws which shall be so constructed that any one, even without practice or skill, will be able to file a saw true and accurate, and which shall be simple in construction and convenient in use.
p The invention consists in an improved sawfiler formed by the combination of the sliding block, having a longitudinal dovetailed groove in its lower side and a straight and two inclined cross grooves in its upper side, and whether made in one or more pieces, the fileholder, having its sides rabbeted and provided with screw-clamps for holding the file, and the catch-spring, with each other and with the saw-clamp, having longitudinal grooves in its sides and series of catch-holes in the upper side, as hereinafter fully described.
A represents the clamps between which the saw is placed, and which are secured in a vise in the usual way.
In the outer sides of the clamp A are formed longitudinal grooves, so that the said clamp may fit into the dovetailed block B, which slides upon it. In the upper side of the block B are formed three grooves, the central groove being at right angles with the said sliding block, and the two side grooves being inclined in opposite directions, as shown in Fig. -1.
O is the file-holder, the lower part of which is rabbeted upon its sides, so thatthe said lower part may fit into the grooves of the block B, the shoulders of the said rabbets resting upon the upper side of the said block.
The holder 0 has a handle formed upon its rear end and a knob attached to the upper side of its forward part, for convenience in holding and operating it.
To the lower side of the holder 6 is secured the file D by means of clamping-screws E, or
other convenient means that will hold the file securely and allow it to be readily changed.
In the upper side of one part of the sawclamp A, or in a bar or plate attached to the said part, are formed a number of sets of holes at a distance apart equal to the distance apart of the teeth of the different saws to be filed.
To the end of the sliding block B is attached a spring, F, the outer end of which has apoint formed upon it, to enter the holes in the clamp A and hold the device securely while the sawteeth are being filed. The catch-spring F also serves as a gage, for convenience in adjusting the block B and allowing it to be moved forward each time the exact distance of a tooth.
The block B may be made in three pieces, if desired.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent An improved saw-filer, formed by the combination of the block B, having alongitudinal dovetailed groove in its lower side and a straight and two inclined cross-grooves in its upper side, and whether made in one or more pieces, the file-holder G, having its sides rabbeted and provided with, screw-clamps E for holding the file D, and the catch-sprin g F, with each other and with the saw-clamp A, having longitudinal grooves in its sides and series of catch-holes in its upper side, substantially as herein shown and described.
GEORGE REMSEN HUFF.
