Description

(No Model.)
S. Y. KITTLE.
SAW HOLDING VISB.
I Patented May 25, 1886.
UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE.
STEPHEN Y. KITTLE, OF \VILKES-BARRF], PENNSYLVANIA.
SAW-HOLDING VlSE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 342,698, dated May 25, 1886.
Application filed March 8, 1886. Serial No. 194,419. (No model.)
To (tZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, STEPHEN Y. KITTLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at XVilkesBarr, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saw-Filing Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to automatic filingmachines for band-saws, and my object is to so oscillate a saw beneath a file in a given radius that a suitable kerf and bevel will be given each tooth as it passes beneath the re ciproeating file, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a perspective, and Fig. 2 a longitudinal section, of my invention. v
' In the figures, A represents that portion of an ordinary saw-filing machine which holds the saw. To this portion or piece I make a curved extension, B. This extension B is on the curve of a true circle, and is provided upon each side with a flange, m m, and longitudinally of it at its center a slot, 0.
D represents an adjustable vise for holding the saw. This vise has two jaws, d d, between which is placed a movable rest-block, e. The back of the saw a rests upon this block, being adjusted by the upward or downward movement of said block vertically. The block is operated by means of a threaded thumbrod, E. The jaws may be made to fit snugly against the sides of the saw by a screw or other suitable device, in order to steady it and hold it during the operation of filing; but not so tightly but that it may be drawn automatically endwise during the operation. The lower end of the vise is curved to suit that of the extension, and from its center depends a threaded teat 'or bolt, which passes through the slot 0 of the extension B, and is provided with set-nut F.
The vise is capable of a backward or for ward movement on its seat, and may be adj usted at any angle by means of the setserew to give the teeth of the saw the proper bevel on either side as the file is reciprocated over its edge. The file-holder is reciprocated and the saw moved by the usual mechanism for the purpose employed in automatic sawfiling machines; but as such forms no part of thepresentinvention a detailed description of the same is deemed unnecessary.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A saw-holding vise having a curved bottom, which is adjustable upon a base which is upon the curve of a true circle, the teeth of the saw being operated upon at the center of the radius of the circle, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The curved slotted base B, in combination with a saw-holding vise, said vise being provided with set-screws for adjusting the vise, as also the saw, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
STEPHEN Y. 'KITTLE.
