UNITED STATES PATENT oFFlcE,
KEGHAM BALIKJIAN, or NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
ARTICLE F FURNITURE.
Application filed August 13, 1924. Serial No. 731,768.
Essex and State of New Jersey, have inp vented a newA and Improved Article of Furniture, oflwhich the following is a description.
My invention relates to sofas as well as 1c to chairs and upholstered articles of furniture, and the invention particularly relates to the means for supporting the springs in the upholstery. It is well known that springs in upholstered furniture when sustained by an ordinary arrangement of webbing strips resultin the breaking down of the upholstery owing to the lack of strength and durability in the webbing assemblage.
The general object of my invention is to provide a novel web assemblage possessing increased strength, ample to sustain the springs for an indefinite period without danger of the upholstery breaking down due to the breaking of the webbing.
My invention provides a construction of an. article of furniture that permits of the Aembodiment of a webbing assemblage comprising either two series of crossed webbing strips to sup ort the springs or a single v series of web ing strips so positioned as to afford increased resistance to the tendency of the springs and the strains of use to disf rupt the webbing.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, it being understood that the drawings are merely illustrative of. one example of the invention.
Figure 1 is a front view of the upper part of a two-part sofa or settee;`
Figure 2 is a similar view of a stool or lower partof said article;
Figure 3 is a transverse vertical section through the article of furniture with the parts assembled.
In carrying out my invention in practice as for example in a sofa or .like article, a stool section or lower portion designated generally by the numeral 10 is provided, said stool portion including a top frame 11 here shown as rectangular and suitable legs 12. To the top surface of the frame 11 1 apply longitudinal strips of webbing 13 and transverse strips 14 arranged after the usual manner in basket pattern. The ends of the webbing` are secured to the frame 11 by tacks 15.
The upper section of the article of furniture designated generally by the numeral 16 is here shown as in the form to constitute the article a settee, said upper section having a back and arm Tests. The upper section 16 includes a frame 17 usually rectangular. Advantageously, to the frame 17 at the under side of the same, in the preferred form of my invention, I apply longitudinal webbing strips 18 and transverse web strips 19 made into basket pattern asusual. It will be observed that the article now embodies in its respective sections two series of crossed webbing strips the one at the top surface of the stool 10 and the other on the under surface of the frame 17 of the upper section.
When the sections 10 and 16 are assembled as in Figure 3, it will be seen that the two series of strips are disposed one upon the other to reinforce each other. The result is that a support of great strength is provided for the upholstery springs 20 of the seat, as will be clear from Figure 3 where it will be seen that beneath each spring are four crossing strips of webbing.
A further advantage of the described arrangement of webbing` strips is that both the strips on the stool 10 and the strips on the upper section 16 are clamped at their ends between the frames 11 and 17, the arrangement serving to resist the liability of the strips being torn from their connection with the respective frames under the strains to which the strips are subjected when the article of furniture is in use.
As will readily be understood any suitable members of themyself strictly to the exact details herein illustrated, since, manifestly, the same can be considerably Varied without departure from thespirit of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described iny invention, I claim:
1. An article of furniture including separate-upper and lower sections each comprising a frame, webbing on the upper surface of the lower frame and on the under side of the upper frame, the upper frame being im* the webbing are clamped between the frames.
2. In an article of furniture, upper and lower frames, and spring supporting web-` bing on each of said frames and imposed one upon the other.
3. In an article offurniture, upper and lower frames, and spring supporting webbing on each of said frames and ximposed one upon the other; together` with means uniting said frames together.
