sis'ts otWo angular side members; which lentend on either side of the stool 'and are Apivotedr to the two :hacklegs 2 kof thefstool" by pivot bo'lts, shown in detail inFig. f5.
The 'bolts are "enlarged at '8a and this portion of-tl'iebo'lt extendsthrough a. hole infthe side inelnber'7 of the lbackbut this enlarged por-.iw tion is a greaterdepth `than the nietal of the-- side section, so that the boltwillV act asia spivotfor theback section.: A nut Gis mount- 'edfon the 'threaded portion ofthe-'bolt and the 4back l are connected togetherY 4byA a L back is below'tlhe seat ofthe stool. VThe back sec- Ition'is -.:yielding'l y connectedV to the stool'by each side of the back,
of the back and through perforations inthe back legs 2 of the stool, andeach bolti has a and between 'the Wing nut and the back leg ofthe stool is a -spring 14, which yields when pressure is applied to the back. Surrounding the springis a cup sha-pedstop 15, Whichlilnits the movement ot `the back, and theainount of movementcan 'be regulated iby 'the'thumb nut. `This 'cup shaped stop also acts 'to enclose the spring 1 andllirnitsthe compression of thejs Y AiIn1 `i,'g. l3'fIhave illustratedxaniodicaf tin ofthe Stop vShown in Fig. f5 and in einem `25.75 V The `upper endsvof Atheside menibeis'of 651 against the side .fof thefleg andispivoted 20j surface. By this construction theback will instance the stop is in the form of a sleeve 15a, which is located between the bolt 11 and the spring 14.
The back rest 9, which connects the two side members 7-7 of the back section of the stool, has bearings 16 welded to its back and one arm 17 of each bearing is perforated for the passage of a rivet or other pivot 18,*which not only connects the two side members 7 of ttheback but alsoallows the back restto swing 'on said side members;
amount of movement of the back rest, the
*,boltsllaextend throughtheross bar 10a and through holes inthe rear legs@ ofthe stool.A On this bolt is a thumb screw and b etween this thumb screwlandthe back leg is a coil spring shown in detail kin Fig. 13. In
the upperv endV of each side member ,7a Vof the back are a seriesy of perforationsl, through one of, which passes a pivot bolt 22,011 which is a thumb nut 23. The bolt passes through bearings 16a von the back rest 9a and stop lugs 19a project from the said bearings 16a andl limit the pivotal movement of theback fseat.
rest. It will be noticed thatthe members of the back section are bent outwardly from the stool, so as to clear the seat of the stool, (through preventing the back section from pinching the clothing of the occupant of the In Figs 9 and 10 I have illustratedr a modification in which the side member 7c of the baclrsectio-n has a-right angle bent therein* as at 24, so thatwhile the major portion ofthe said side member is directly back of the leg,y the lower ,portion rests k8, the stool i Vin these figures is thesame as that shown thereto by a bolt 8c. In this instance the bolt llc is in the form of an eye bolt. A pivot pin 25 passes through the eye of the bolt and connects the bolt with the side member of the back. On the bolt is a wing nut, a coil springand astop similar to that' shown in Fig. i
In Figs. 11 and 12 I have illustrated a 'still' further modification in which the side y'members 7d are' parallelwith the sidesof the rearlegs. and are'pivoted-thereto by a bolt 8d. That part of each side member extending `.beyond the bolt is bent as at 7 e so as to rest Y in front of the leg 2, and a headed bolt 11d extends through theleg and through the V portion 7 e o f the sidemembenand has a v ng -nut thereon and a coil spring and stop similar .to'thatillustrated in Fig. 5. i'
When itis desired to rigidly secure'the back section to the legsof the stool or other`l seat vstructure,,the bolts V11A and the spring and otherpa'rts are; removed and a plain bolt and nut 'substituted therefor, which secures the back rigidlyfto the stool.
I claim:l
f l. The combination in ya l seat structure having legs,y of a back section having Side members; a bolt extending through each side memberl andthrough each'back'leg of the stool, eachJ bolt :being enlarged`whe1-e its 95 passes through ythe .side member of the back section, thehead of eachbolt dBeing spaced from its;sidemember`; and means for securing the/bolt' rigidly to the back leg 4of the stool. f Thelcombination inga seat structure, of a seat. member, legs supportingsaid member, a yielding back-restfiomprsnstwo upright andgsubstantially rigid side, members pivotally secured respectively to two ofsaidlegs at points `below the seat, the securing means providing aloose kfitandf 'pe'rmitti'n' 'independent1 movements ofsaid sidemeni ers so that when pressure is applied to one side of the back-rest that side may yield toA allow` the backrest to assume a planeat an angle to the normal vplane of said rest, Springs resiliently supporting the back-restin'v aforward position, and means associated withl the llegs and with the sidemembers for limiting" thev rearward movement Aof said rest.
`3. The combination in a seat structure, of a seat member, legs of angle section supporting said member, a .yielding back-rest comthe back-rest to assume a plane at an angle to the normal plane of said rest, a second pair of bolts extending through both of the flanges of each contacting pair at points intermediate the seat member and the first-named bolts, and a spring conned on each of said second bolts and exerting pressure upon the inner face of the leg flanges to resilently maintain the back-rest in a normal advanced position.
