To all 'whom t may'concerm- Y Be it known that we, MAURICE TAURER and JOHN SCHENKE, citizens of the' United States, residing at Chicago, inf the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements iny Furniture, of which the following is a Specication. v 2 In order to reduce the space required in shipment, it is desirable to construct chairs, sofas and various other articles of furniture so that they may be taken apart and packed in small compass.

The object of the present invention is to produce a form of knock-down construction which shall be simple, inexpensive, strong and rigid.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a rocking chair embodying the features of our invention. Fig. 2 is a fragmental rear side view of the chair. Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken in the plane of line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken in the plane of line 4 4 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a lower side view of the seat section, upon a. reduced scale.

The chair herein shown consists yof four sections, namely, two side frames A, a seat section B, and a back section C. Eachside frame A consists of members 1, 2, 2, 3 and 4, rigidly secured together. On the inner side of the frame member 2 isrigidly secured a bar 5, which bar is cut away to provide a groove 6 between the bars' 2 and 5. The groove 6 preferably extends from the forward portion of the side frame to the rear portion thereof. The groove is Slightly tapered, as shown in Fig. 3.

The two Yside frames A are secured together in parallel relation by means of the seat section B. The latter consists of a rectangular frame formed of the front bar 7, two side bars 8 and 10 and a rear bar 9. The side bars 8 and 10 are cut away and tapered toform tongues adapted to fit into the grooves 6, as shown in'Fig. 3. Preferably the tongues are of such length as to extend from the bar 7 to the bar 9.

The back section C is a rigid frame adapted to fit between the two side frames A. In the lower edge of the back section C are two dowel pins 11 which fit into dowel holes 12 (Fig. 4) in the upper edge of the bar 9 of the seat section. I n assembling the chair, the seat section- B 1s engaged with the bars 5 of the-side frames A and one or more screws 14 (Fig. 3) are passedl up throuo'h the bar 5 into the lower edges of the bars 8 and 10. The back section C is then put in place, and screws 15 passed through the lugs 13 into the rear side ofthe back section C.

To knock down the chair, the screws 15 are removed, the back section C lifted out of place, the screws 14 removed and the seat section B lifted out of engagement with the side frames A. The four sections of the chair may then be packed in comparatively small space.

While we have disclosed this invention as embodied in a chair, it will be understood that the same method of construction may be employed in the manufacture of benches, divans, sofas and other forms of seating. In the following claims, the term side frame is intended to be constructed broadly to include the corresponding part of an elongated article of furniture, such as a bench or settee.

We claim as our invention:

1. An article of knockdown furniture having, in combination, two side frames, a seat section and a back section, each side frame having secured to its inner side a bar extending from the forward portion of the side frame to the rear portion thereof, a groove being provided between said bar and the adjacent portion of the Side frame, said seat section consisting of a front bar, a rear bar and two side bars, said side bars being tapered to fit within said grooves, dowel pins for connecting the lower edge of the back section to the rear edge of theseat section, perforated lugs on the upper portion of the side frames, against. which lugs the upper portion of the back section is arranged to rest, and screws extending through said perforated lugs into the rear side of the back section.

2. An article of knockdown furniture having, in combination, two side frames, a seat section and a back section, each side frame having secured to its inner side a bar extending from the forward portion of the side frame to the rear portion thereof, a groove being provided between said bar and the adjacent portion of the side frame, said seat section consisting` of a front bar, a rear har and two side bars, said side bars being tapered to lit within said grooves, interengagging devices on the lower` edge of the back section and the rear edge of the seat seo tion, and ineans for connecting' the upper portion of the side frames to lthe upper portion of the hack section.

3. An article of knock-down furniture l0 having, in combination, two side frames, a

seat Sectio-n and ay back section, each side frame having upon its inner side a groove extending from the forward portion of the side frame to the rear portion thereof, the Seat section having at each side. a ltongue of approximately the saine length as lSaid groove and adapted to fit into said groove, interengaging devices on the lower edge of the back section and the rear edge of the Seat section, and means for connecting' the upper Lemos@ portion of the back Section to the adjacent portions of the side frame.
