To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AMAsA M. JonNsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New .York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sash Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices used in conjunction with window sashes and the like.
Moreparticularly the invention relates to top sash raising and lowering devices, and sash locking means.
Some of the objects of the present invention are to provide a device which may be attached to the upper and lower sashes of a window so that the upper sash may be lowered by operating the lower sash; to
- equip the upper and lower sashes of a window with a device of simple construction and operation so that by raising the lower sash a predetermined distance and then lowering the same, the upper sash may be lowered a predetermined distance. lVith these and other objects in View the invention resides in the particular construction, combination and relative arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is in elevation of a window which embodies an upper and lower sash to which the device of the present invention is attached.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view taken on the line 22, Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2, but showing the lowersash raised a predetermined distance the distance the upper sash is to be lowered.
Figure 4 is a View similar to Figure 2, but showing the lower sash brought down to its position in Figure l with the upper sash lowered the desired predetermined distance,
Figure 5 is a detached perspective view of the lug engaging member forming a part of-the lower sash element.
Figures 6 and 7 are elevations of a part of the lower sash element whichhas arranged for movement therein the lug engaging member.
Referring now more particularly to' the drawing for details, it will be manifest that, the device of the present invention will include an upper sash element 10 and a lower sash element 11.
The element 10 consists of a flat plate 12 which has secured thereto in any'desired manner, or formed integral therewith lugs 13. The plate 12 may be of any preferred length to accommodate the desired number of lugs 13. The lugs 13 on the plate 12 are spaced equi-distantly any desired distance. The element 10 is attached to one of the stiles 14 of the upper sash 15.
The element 11 consists of a part 16 in cluding an attaching flange 17, a barrel 18 and a groove 19 in the said barrel. The element 11 also includes a lug engaging member 20 which is arranged for movement in the barrel 18. A spring 21 is interposed between one end of the member 20 and the wall 22Wl110h closesone end of the barrel 18. A finger piece'23 is attached to the member 20, and the said piece extends through the groove 19 and coacts therewith to hold the member 20 in. any one of three positions for reasons to appear. The free end of the member 20 is provided with a bevelled or inclined face 24 and a face 25 which is parallel to the longitudinal axis of the member 20. The element 11 is attached to the meeting rail 26 of the lower sash 27 in alinement with the element 10 on the upper sash.
In practice when it is desired to lower the upper sash the member 20 is set to present the inclined face 24 thereof to the lugs 13 of the element 10. The lower sash 27 is then raised the desired distance-the distance the upper sash is to be lowered-the end of the member 20 will ride over the lugs 13. The lower sash 27 is then lowered and because the face 25 of the member 20 will have engaged one of the lugs 13 the upper sash 15 will be caused to move downwardly with the lower sash 27 a distance equal to the distance the lower sash had been previously raised. At this stage of the operation the upper sash 15 will be in a partly lowered position and'the lower sash 27 will be in its normal closing position.
As stated there may be any number of lugs 13, and obviously when it is customary to lower the upper sash a considerable distance, a relatively short element- 10 may, be arranged mid-way of the stile 14 to obviate the employment of many lugs 13.
hen it is desired to raise the upper sash to a closing position from an open position, the member 20 is given a half rotation to present the face 25 to the next upper adjacent lug 18. The lower sash 27 is then raised and as the end of the member 20 the said adjacent lug 13, the upper sash 15 will be caused to move upwardly, and
it will be moved until it is in a closing position. The lower sash 27 may then be lowered. As the sash 27 is being lowered, the inclined face 24: of the member 20 will ride over the lugs 13. In this way the lower sash 27 may be moved to a closing position. It will be manifest that at this stage of the operation just explained both sashes will be in normal closing positions.
\Vhen the sashes have been moved to their normal closing positions as just explained both sashes will be held locked against movement until the positions of the faces 9A and 25 of the member 20 are reversed, inasmuch as the parallel face 25 will be in engagement with the lug immediately above it.
By moving the piece 23 mid-way of the groove 19, the member 20 may be held in a neutral position. Under such arrangement of the member 20, the lower sash 27 may be raised and lowered at will without in any way moving the upper sash l5.
\Vhile the preferred forms of elements of the device of the present invention has been shown, it is to be understood that changes, alterations and modifications, within the scope of the claim, may be resorted to whenever it is deemed necessary or desirable.
lVhat is claimed is:
A device comprising a barrel having att-aching portions and a groove therein which consists of two parallel branches disposed diametrically opposite each other and a transverse branch which joins said parallel branches, a member having a lug-engaging end having a flat face in parallelism with the longitudinal axis of said member and an inclined face, said member being disposed in and fitting a bore in said barrel with the lug-engaging end normally protruding therefrom for longitudinal sliding movement and one-half turning movement therein, said member being actuated by a spring arranged in the bore in said barrel between one end of said member and the end wall of said bore, and a manipulator attached to said member and extending in said groove and capable of engagement with different portions of the walls of said groove to hold the lug engaging end in different operative positions, and in an inoperative position within said bore.
