To all whom it may concern:
7 Be it known that I, ALBERT R. FERRELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at 11 West Kirke Street, Chevy Chase, in the county of Montgomery and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window-Sash Operating and Looking Mechanism, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings. Thi invention relates to a window sash operating and locking mechanism and it has for its object to provide simple and inexpensive means constructed in such manner that the upper and lower sash of a window may be caused to move in unison and automatically held in any position to which the are moved without the use of sash weights, sash cords or the usual receiving pockets for said sash weights.
I It is a further object of the invention to provide a window sash operating mechanism of the character described provided with means for not only holding but positively locking the sash in any position to which they may be moved and, in addition to provide means for automatically locking the window in completely closed condition whenever the sash are moved to such completely closed position.
It is an additional object of the invention to provide a mechanism of the character described which may be easily attached to windows already in use, the principal part of the mechanism that is to be attached to the window frame being carried by and bodily movable with a parting strip to be placed in position with the parting strip.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will be set forth in the detailed description which follows.

In carrying out the invention, the sash are notched, as indicated at 9 and 10, for "the reception of racks ll and 12 which;mesh with pinions 13,;it being understood that the structure shown is duplicated at each s1de of the window. Thus when the lower sash is pulled downwardly the uppersash 1s caused to move upwardly and the sash counterbalanceeach other so thatqtheygwill remain in any position towhich they are moved. I- am aware of the'fact that -de-' vices of this nature have heretofore; been suggested but the constructions, proposed were usually such as to involve the complete rebuilding of the window. In other words they were of such a nature-that it was eces sary to incorporate them in the -window construction at the time of the building'of the same. The device of the present invention is of such simplicity-that it: may be readily existence. In applying theinvention to a window already in existence, it is only incorporated in windows already in necessary to recess the sash, as indicated at 9 and 10, apply the racks 11 and 12 and then place the parting strips, 14, in.position, the pinions 13 being bodily carried by and incorporated in the parting strips. To this end the parting strips are made in sections comprising upper-and lower portions 14 and l jrespectively, and interposed metallic bearing sections 14 in which the pinions 13 are journaled at 15. Thus these parting strips and pinions and the racks may be sold as articles of manufacture and i v readily applied by any householder'having merely the skill to recess the sash, as indicated at 9 and 10, and to fasten the racks in the recessed portions of the sash.
To automatically lock the window in completely closed condition, I mount in the hearing portions 14 of the parting strips, dogs 16, which are pivoted at 17 and are weighted at 18 in such a way that they tend to swing outwardly beyond the face of the parting strips. Their outer faces are inclined, as indicated at 19 and as the lower sash moves downwardly, the edges of plates 20 that are secured to the upper edge of the lower sash,
rides over the inclined faces 19 and force the dogs inwardly, the weights 18 causing the dogs to swing outwardly and engage over the upper face of the plates, when the lower's'ash has reached its completely closed position.
cylindrical casing 21 threaded at 22 to adapt it to be screwed into an opening 23 that may be bored in the window frame. The casing 21' carries a pin 24 which is normally thrust rearwardly by a spring 25. A wedge 26 is adapted to pass through an opening 27 formed in the side of the casing 21 and is actuated by a rod 28 and a head 29, the rod 28 being guided in a casing 30 that may be screwed'into an opening 31 bored-in the window frame at right angles to the opening 23. Thus by pressing inwardly upon the head 29 the wedge will be caused to act against the pin 24 and thrust the same outwardly and into the path of movement-of the teeth of the rack 13. Consequently rotation of the pinion Willbe prevented and thus movement ofthe' sash will be prevented. By pulling outwardly upon the head 29 the wedge will be moved out of the path of the pin 24 and the spring 25' will then act to retract the pin and permit rotation of the pinion.
It is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the precise construction set forth but that it includes within its purview whatever. changes fairly come within either the terms or the spirit of the appended claims. 1 r
Having described my invention, what I claim is:
1. A window sash operating mechanism comprising in combination with upper and lower sash, of rack bars seated in recessed portions of said sash, a parting strip disposed between said sash, said parting strip comprising anintermediate metallic bearing portion having a transverse slot formed therein, a pinion mounted in said slot and engaged with the rack bars of both of said sash, a dog likewise pivoted in said slot of the metallic bearing portion and weighted to cause it to swing outwardly beyond the face of said bearing portion, and means carried by the lower sash for engaging said dog.

A window comprising upper and lower sliding sash, rack bars seated in recessed portions of said sash, a parting strip disposed between said sash, said parting strip comprising an intermediate metallic bearing portion and a pinion pivotally mounted in said hearing portion and engaging said rack barsi 3. A device of the character described comprising upper and lower sliding sash, racks carried by said sash, a parting strip, a pinion pivoted in said parting strip and engageable with said rack, a casing adapted to be screwed into the window casing adjacent said pinion and having an opening formed in its side, a spring actuated pin in said casing, the spring acting to retract said pin, a second casing adapted to be screwed into the window frame at right angles to the first named casing,a wedge adapted to enter the opening in the side of the first named casing, the last named casing carrying an operating rod for said wedge, said wedge acting to project said pin from its casing and into the path of movement of the teeth of one of said racks to thereby lock the sash against'movement.
4;. A device of the character described comprising upper and-lower sliding sash, racks carried by said sash, parting strips, pinions pivoted upon said parting strips and engageable with said racks, a casing adapted to be screwed into thewindow frame and comprising a spring actuated pin and a wedge insertable in the window frame at right angles to said pin for actingagainst said pin to thrust it into the path of movement of the rack.
