Description

Juy 21, 1925.
lJ. R. DAVIS GIAMP Filed Dec. 10. 1924 A MWIM ATTORNEY Patented July 21, 1925.
Unire sr PATENT OFFICE.
JEFF R. DAVIS, OF HIGHLAND HOME, ALABAMA.
CLAMP@ Application filed December 10, 1924. Serial No. 755,043.
` State of Alabama, have invented new and useful Improvements in Clamps, of which the following is a specification.
rfhis invention contemplates the provision of a combined bench hook and work clamp designed for use by carpenters, cabinet makers and the like, and wherein the clamp is susceptible of quick and easy adjustment longitudinally along the body of the hook, and capable of being engaged with or disengaged from the work as the occasion may require. i
The nature and advantages of the iiivention will be better understood when the following detailed description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing, the invention residing in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as claimed.
in the drawing forming part of this application, like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, and wherein Figure 1 is a view showing how the invention is arranged upon the work bench and the work clamped thereon.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on line 2 2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the hook.
The device forming the subject matter of the present invention consists of what I terni a combined bench hook and work clamp for use by carpenters and the like, the hook including an elongated body portion 10 which is oset in opposite directions at the ends thereof to provide a shoulder 11 arranged beneath the body portion 10 and a shoulder 12 rising above the body portion `10. The body portion 10 is substantially of U-shape in cross section between the shoulders 11 and 12 and for the major portion of its length as clearly.shown in Figure 2, while the top of the body portion is longitudinally slotted as at 13.
The clamp used in connection ywith this member includes a substantially T-shaped upright, the head 14 of which is arranged in the U-shaped portion of the body 10, while the shank 15 projects upwardly through the slot 13 as shown in Figure 2. Pivoted on one side of the shank 15 is a lever 16 having a cam shaped portion 17 designed to engage the work 18 in the manner shown in Figure 1. The pivot 19 for this lever is passed through the shank 15 and through an opening in said lever, the
lever being fixed to a pivot by means of a threaded element 2O which passes through the cam shaped portion of the lever and also through the pivot.
In practice, the device is arranged upon the work bench or table 21 in the manner shown in Figure 1, wherein it will be noted that the shoulder 11 which depends from the underside of the body portion 10 of the hook engages the forward edge of the table or bench, while the work 18 is arranged across the elongated body portion 10l with one edge contacting the shoulder 12. The clamp is susceptible of sliding movement longitudinally of thebody portion 10, and thereby can be used with work of different dimensions, the clamp being moved into engagement with the adjacent edge of the work, after which the lever 16 is lowered to b ring the cam shaped portion 17 into eectlve contact therewith.` The entire device is very simple in construction and easy to handle, and can be manufactured and sold at a nominal cost.
lVhile it is believed that from the foregoing description, the nature and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent, I desire to have it understood that l do not limit myself to what is herein shown and described, and that such changes may be resorted to when desired as fall within the scope of what is claimed.
Having thus described the invention, I claim:
1. A device of the character described comprising an elongated member adapted to be arranged transversely across the work bench, and upon which the work is adapted to repose, a shoulder depending from said member and adapted to engage the adjacent edge of the bench, a shoulder rising from the member adjacent the other end thereof and adapted to be engaged by the adjacent end of the work, a clamp slidably mounted i on said member and including a shank adapted to engage the opposed edge of the work, and a pivoted cam shaped lever mounted on the shank and adapted to engage the upper surface of the work.
2.' A combined bench hook and clamp of the character described comprising an elonn gated member adapted to be arranged trans versely on said bench, a` shoulder depending from the member adjacent one end thereof and adapted to engage the outer edge of the bench, a shoulder rising from said' member adjacent the other end thereof and adapted to be engaged by the Work, said member being Substantiallly U-Shaped in cross seetion for the major portion of its length and having a longitudinal slot in the top thereof,
JEFF R. DAVIS.
