This invention relates to new and useful improvements in pencil holders, and has more particular reference to a gynecological tracer.

More particularly, the invention proposes a new and improved pencil holder which will serve to trace drawings of gynecological findings with the thumb of the examining hand while the patient is being examined so as to synchronize the drawings with the findings.

It is proposed to characterize the new and improved gynecological tracer by the fact that it includes a splint-like double shell adapted to engage upon the thumb and having shell sections hingedly connected at their front ends. Means is provided for locking the shell sections together holder be light, and easy to sterilize. For example it may be of aluminum, steel, brass, or even plastic, if the latter does not change its form during boiling.

Still further the invention contemplates numerous forms and designs of the new pencil holder. One modified form is shown in which the pencil clamp is adjustably mounted to assume various adjusted positions angular to the double shell.

Another object of the invention is the construction of a device as mentioned which is simple and durable and which may be manufactured and sold at a reasonable cost.

. For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

The pencil holder is used as follows: The gynecological examination is performed in the usual way and if the examiner finds aberrations from normal worth recording he will engage the pencil holder on the thumb of the inner examining hand, by forcing the shell sections against the sidesof theitlmmb so that the'ratchet-like bolt is will hold the shell sections" in clamped positions. Thus, the shell sections hold the interphalangeal joint of the thumb stiff. Now thethumb may be used to trace a drawing of the gynecological findings simultaneously with the examination.

While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my'invention, itis to be understood that I do not limit myselfzto thenecting the shell sections together at their front ends, an arcuate rack bar pivotally mounted on one ofthe shell sections and formed along one edge with ratchet teeth, a lug extending from the side of the other shell section and formed with-an opening through which said rack bar extends, and a spring mounted on the shell section which pivotally supports saidrack bar and engaging and urging said rack bar into a position in which said ratchet teeth engage the -material of said lug at one side of said opening, said ratchet-teeth being directed to idle past said lug when the shell sections are: moved together and to restrain movement of the'shell sections when moved apart.

In a pencil holder having a. pair of opposed semi-circular shell'sections and a pencil clamp, means adjustably mounting the pencil clamp on one of the shell sections to be adjustable'laterally relative thereto, comprising a support 'shankew tending from the Q pencil clamp, a transverse groove formed in the face of the said one shell section,- said groove being of a Width greater than the thickness of said support shank and said support shank having its free end'extended intosaid groove, means within said groove urging said support shank into facial contact with one side wall of said groove, serrations formed on the'said one side wall of said groove, serrations formed on the face of said support shank adjacent the said one side wall and engaging said first-mentioned serrations to retain the support shank and the pencil clamp carried thereby against lateral movement relative to the shell section, whereby said support shank may be moved against the action of said means in a direction'to separate said-serrations to free said support shank and the pencil holder carried therebyto be movedlaterally of the shell sections within said transverse groove. 1 3. In a pencil holder having a pair of opposed semi-circular shell sections and a pencil clamp, means adjustably mounting the pencilclamp on one of the shell sections to be adjustable laterally relative thereto, comprising a support shank extending from the pencil clamp, a transverse groove formed in the face of the said one shell section, said groove being of a width greater than the thickness of said support shank and said support shank having its free end extended into said groove, means within said groove urging said support shank into facial contact with one sidewall of said groove, serrations formed on the-said one side wall of said groove, serrations formed on the face of said support shank adj acent the said one side wall and engaging said first- 'mentioned serrations to retain the support shank "and the pencil clamp carried thereby against lateral movement relative to the shell section, whereby said support shank may be moved against the action of said means in a direction to separate said serrations to free said support shank and the pencil holder carried thereby to be moved laterally of the shell sections within saidjtransverse groove, said means comprises a leaf spring mounted within said groove and bearing against the face of said support shank opposed to the face formed with said secondmentioned serrations.

In a pencil holder having a pair of opposed semi-circular shell sections and a pencil clamp, means adjustably mounting the pencil clamp on one of the shell sections tobeadjustablc laterally relative thereto, comprising a support shank extending from the pencil clamp, a transverse groove formed in the face of the said one shell section, said groove being of a width greater than the thickness of said support shank and said support shank having its free end extended into said groove, means within said groove urging said support. shank into facial contact with one side Wall of said groove, serrations formed on the said one side wall of said groove, serrations formed on the face of said support shank adjacent the said one side wall and engaging said firstmentioned serrations to retain the support Shank and the pencil clamp carried thereby against lateral movement relative to the shell section, whereby said support shank may be moved against the action of said-means in a direction to separate said serrations to free said support shank and the pencil holder carried thereby to be moved laterally of the shell sections within said transverse groove, said one side wall of said groove and said serrated face of said support shank being inclined toward said support shank to prevent disengagement of said support shank from said groove in the interengaged position of said serrations.
