Description

J. C. WARD `SOUNDING TOY Feb. l, 1925.
Filed June` s, 1924 Patented Feb. 10, 1925.
UNITED STATES JAMES C. WARD, OF LITTLE ROCK, ARKANSAS.
SOUNDING- TOY.
Application filed .Tune 9,
To all whom` it may concern:
Be it known that I, Jamas C. VARD, a citizen of the United States, resident of Little Rock, in the county of Pulaski and State ot Arkansas, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Sounding Toys; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or iigures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a side view of the invention as in use.
Figure 2 is a side view of the invention on a larger scale, with the mouth piece in iront view.
Figure 3 is a central longitudinal section of the invention.
Figure 4 is a section on the line 4 4, Figure 3.
The invention has relation to musical instruments adapted to be played by one person blowing therethrough and to be sounded or to have the musical notes produced by another person holding the same instrument to his or her mouth the latter being opened to enable the mouth cavity to act, said cavity being changed in form to produce different notes as in singing. Other objects and advantages will appear.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating the invention, the numeral l designates a mouth piece or plate adapted to lit over the mouth of a person and having therein a slot 2, one lateral edge of said slot having adjacent thereto the exit opening 3 of a flattened passageway 4, adapted to direct a current oi' air passing therethrough across said slot and to thereby set in vibration the air or air column contained in the oral cavity of said person.
The mouth plate l is curved at 5 to better engage the lips of the person using the saine and the said lateral edge of said slot is provided with a. bent lip 6 adapted to rest upon the lower lip. The passageway 4 is formed as a part of said mouth piece and has its outer end portion adapted at 7 to engage 1924. Serial N0. 718,793.
within one end of a fleizible tube 8 of rubber 55 or the like, the other end of said tube having a suitable mouth piece 9, which another person may use to cause the said current of air to pass through the passageway 4, and to thereby sound a musical note in accord with 00 the formation of the oral cavity of the other said person, which form is changed at will to sound different musical notes as in singing.
The invention is adapted for use in sound- 0I ing musical notes upon a row of glasses oi different pitch by placing the mouth plate over each glass or tumbler in its proper turn and in the meantime causing the current ot air to pass through the passage 4 as afore- 70 said. The invention may also be used in sounding notes upon bottles, spoons, the hollow oi the hand, or any object containing a body of air in a cavity thereof.
If desired the air current may be ur 75 nislied or caused to pass through the rubber tube by a bellows instead of by a person blowing therethrough, as will be obvious. Or a current of air may be caused to pass through the tube by a compressed air tank connection having a suitable valve control, or by an air pump connection.
I claim:
l. A sounding toy, comprising a. moutl plate adapted to fit over the mouth of a peison using the same and having a slot and au air passage terminating at one end adjacent one lateral edge of said slot and at its other end having a tubular extension, and a flexible tube at one end engaging said tubular extension and at its other end provided with a mouth piece for another person using the device.
2. A sounding toy comprising a mouth plate adapted to fit over the mouth of a cavity to be sounded and having a. slot and an air passage. and a flexible tube engaging one end of said air passage and at its other end provided with a mouth piece.
3. A sounding toy comprising a mouth slot and at its other end having a tubular extension, said lateral edge of said mouth plate having a bent lip adapted to restupon the lower lip of said person, and a lexible tube engaging said tubular extension and at its other end provided With means for Causing' a, current of air to pass therethrough.
4;. A soundingtoy comprising a mouth 5 plate adapted to fit ove?V the mouth of a.
cavity to be sounded and hewingay slot and an air passage, and a flexible tube engaging the outer end of said air passage and adapted to be blown through in a direction t0- Wards said mouth piece to vibrate und sound 10 the body oi aii' contained in seid cavity.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.V
J AMES C. WARD.
