To all whom it may concern.-

Be itknown that I, AURIQN V. Caravans, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Musical Instruments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertaius to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in musical instru ments, which will be hereinafter more particularly described and pointed out.

a a are twooblong bulbs, which may be made of anysuitable material, as metal,wood ivory, glass, india-rhbber, &c., which when placed within the mouth in proper position, by whistling over them, as one would upon the fingers, will produce a musical sound or modulated tone. After suitable practice a person can play any tune and modulate the same by the breath and produce all the notes of a flute or similar musical instrument. This little device furnishes an excellent accompaniment to any other instrument. These bulbs a a may be attached to rigid legs or stems having a joint at their junction similar to the legs of apair of compasses, with a tighteningsorew to secure the exact distance between the bulbs, (not shown in the drawings,) as different persons in practice adjust the bulbs at different distances. I prefer the device as shown in the drawings, which represents a small flexible rod 13, which is curved to bring the bulbs a. a close together. The two ends I) b are looped and wrapped around the stem, as seen at b" b", Fig. 2. The-bulbs a a are made of flexible india-rubber and are sprung over the loops of the rod B. The wire I) is covered with an india-rubber tube 12. A plain wire maybe used and the bulbs may be molded of hard rubber directly upon the straight ends of the wire and dispense with the loops. The same may be done when any hard material is used for the bulbs, as glass, &c.

such as a common cigar-box, in which a hole is made in one end. The bulbs may be inserted in the orifice, and the performer by lifting and closing the lid when he is whistling a tune can modulate the sound.

In Fig. at is represented a glass lamp chimney d. The bulbs'are similarly used 1n the large end, and modulation is produced by the hand on the small end.

The ends of the Wire may be simply looped and not twisted over, as shown in the drawings, so that the bulb which covers the wire may have an oval end. 0

I claim A mouth-organ consisting of two bulbs a a, attached to the ends of an elastic stem B, whereby the two bulbs may be adjusted toward or from each other, substantially as and for the purpose described.
