VIOLIN HAND-SUPPORT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 2, 1918.
Application filed November 15, 1917. Serial No. 202,163.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, RUBEN I-IANDEL, a citizen of Russia, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Violin Hand-Supports, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to musical instruments and has special reference to a violin attachment designed to constitute a hand brace and support.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a new and improved device of this character interposed between the neck of the violin and the hand of the player which will cause the players hand to assume the correct and natural position for stopping the strings of such instrument while not interfering with the freedom of movement of the hand.

In carrying out the objects of this invention and in the form herein disclosed there is shown a clamp consisting of a cross bar 10 provided with a felted surface 11 arranged to engage beneath the lower or rear side of the body of a violin l2. Projecting outward and upward from this cross bar are standards 13 whereon are screwed sleeve nuts 14 carrying at their upper ends rods 15 having inwardly projecting portions 16 arranged to support blocks 17 provided with under surfaces of cork or felt as at '18. It is to be understood that the threads on the respective members '15 and 13 are of opposite hands so that rotating the sleeve nuts 14 causes the blocks 17 and cross piece 10 to move toward or from each other thus permitting the clamp to be clamped firmly on the violin. Extending from the posts 13 are blocks 19 wherein fit the downturned arms 20 of a yoke 21, the blocks 19 being head 25.. adapted to rest in the center of the users hand as shown in Fig. 1.
In use the clamp is clamped on the violin and the yoke inserted in its proper position. The position of the head 25 is then adjusted to hold the players hand at the proper point, this being accomplished simply by rotating the head 25 and stem at so that the stem moves into or out of the sleeve 23 as desired. Then the player grasps the violin in the usual manner with the head resting against his hand. It will be observed that this device is especially valuable in teaching the violin because it causes the players hand to maintain the correct position. It is a well known fact that there are several positions assumed by the players hand in playing a violin, the different positions depending on the key in which the musical composition is to be played. This device insures the correct position of the hand for the different keys as well as its correct position for fingerlng.
There has thus been provided a simple and efficient device of the kind described and for the purpose specified.
It is obvious that many minor changes may be made in the form and construction of the invention without departing from the material principles thereof. It is not therefore desired to confine the invention to the exact form herein shown and described but it is wished to include all such as properly come within the scope claimed.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
1. A hand brace for violins, comprising a clamp provided with means for attachement to the body of a violin, a yoke, means for detachably connecting the yoke to the clamp anld an extensible hand brace carried by said yo e.
2. A hand brace for violins, comprising a clamp provided with means for attachment to a violin, blocks on said clamp, a yoke provided with downturned ends engageable in said blocks, a threaded sleeve carried by the middle of said yoke and extending away from said clamp, a threaded stem screwed into said threaded sleeve and a head on said threaded stem.
3.
