ANCHOR.
Application filed October 29, 1923.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MoRrrz ALBERT ANKELE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Danville, in the county of Vermilion and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Anchors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention aims to provide a simple means whereby an anchor may be firmly 1 but detachably secured to a railroad rail, or an equivalent structure, to hold one end of a cable.
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the invention appertains.
With the above and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the de tails of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that, with in the scope of what is claimed, changes in the precise embodiment of the invention shown, can be made, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings Figure 1 shows in top plan, a device constructed in accordance with the invention; Figure 2 is an elevation; Figure 3 is a section on the line 33 of Figure 1, parts being in elevation; and Figure 4 is a cross section taken through one of the clamps.
The anchor forming the subject matter of this application preferably is made of metal throughout and includes a support 1, in the form of a bar. Clamps 2, which may be blocks, are located below the support or bar 1 and are connected thereto by pivot elements 3 such as bolts. The clamps 2 have curved cam edges 4 provided wholly or in part with ribs 5, although the cam edges may be roughened in any desired way. At their lower ends, the clamps 2 have outstanding flanges 6 extended part way around the clamps.
The numeral 7 marks a link having a rearwardly extended arm 8 located on top of one of the clamp blocks 2 and connected thereto, beyond one end of the bar, by a Serial No. 671,582.
Assuming that the anchor above described is to be mounted on a railroad rail, the ball of the rail is received between the clamps 2. the upper surface of: the ball cooperating with the lower surface of the bar 1.. When a pull is exerted on the eye 16, the links 7 and 10 will swing with respect toeach on the pivot element 14 and motion will be transmitted to the clamps 2 by way of the pivot elements 9 and 12, the clamps swinging on pivot elements 3, and the cam edges 4 of the clamps 2 engaging the sides of the ball of the rail. the flanges 6 engaging beneath the ball of the rail. The stronger the pull which is exerted on the eye 16, the more securely the clamps 2 grip the ball oi the rail. The construction of the device. however, is such that the grip on the rail or other object may be released readily, as soon as the pull of the cable which is assembled with the eye 16 ceases.
hat I claim is 1-- 1. In a device for anchoring a cable to a railroad rail, a support, cams pivoted eccentrically to the support in spaced relation to each other, links pivotally connected to the cams, means for pivotally connecting the links together, and means for applying tension to the links.
2. A device of the class described, con structed as set forth in claim 1, and further characterized by the fact that the cams have outstanding flanges, at their lower ends disposed in approximately parallel relation to the support.
