From experience I have found that in track laying a number of hands are required in connecting the fish plates to the rail ends. Two hands are employed for holding the plates in the fishing spaces on the opposite sides of the rail, others for inserting the bolts and still others for screwing the nuts on the bolts. In addition to this, when connecting plates other than that of the fish type are employed, considerable time and labor is experienced in arranging the base flanges of the rails between the bzse and overl ing flanges of the connecting plates. lt is therefore my object to produce an extremely simple and cheaply constructed tool, operable by a single hand for forcing the iish plates or like connecting plates into proper position against the sides of the rails and holding the said plates so positioned for so the insertion of the necessary holding means.

A pressure upon the handle bar 1 in a downward direction will force the plates 9 and 10 toward each other, bringing the fianges thereof under the base fial'ige of the rail and forcing the vertical plates of the said members 9 and 10 into the fishing spaces of the rail. The d vice may be also utilized for supporting rails \vhen'the same are carried along the track prior to the laying thereof and the chisel end 2 affords a fulcrum for laterally moving the rails on the ties for the proper engagement of the rails and for other purposes. Having described the invention, I claim A tool for moving fish or like rail con necting plates into rail engagement and for holding said plates so positioned for the in sertion of the connecting bolts therethrough,
