y TH/VEYS i y Patented Dec. 23, 1924e UNITED .s 'rares Box.
Application 'filed 'December To all w71 om. 'it mwg/ concern:
Be it known that I, HAROLD L. iiiivicns, a citizen of the UnitedStates, and resident of Morristown, county of Morris, and fState 4of .New Jersey, have invented a certain new known as folding or knockdown boxes which' in addition to Vser-ving as containers for merchandise are also utilized to act as a medium for the display of such merchandise. Such boxes, in many cases, include a cover upon which advertising mattei' is produced and which is intended to occupy an open, upright, more or less inclined, position for the display of such advertising matter when said boxes have been opened and are used as a means for displaying the goods which they contain. In existing forms of such boxes the contents are utilized to assist in maintaining the cover in the aforesaid upright position with the result that when a. part of said contents has been disposed of or removed from the box the cover is no longer enabled to occupy its intended display position. The particular object of my invention is to provide a box of the indicated type in which the aforesaid disadvantages are avoided and in which the cover may be etliciently set and maintained in an open, display position in a simple manner and independently of any co-operation and regardless of the condition of the contents of the box. Other more specific objects will appear from the description hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, which show an example of the invention without defining its limits, Fig. 1 is a plan view of the box with the cover closed; Fig. 2 is an end view partly in section with the cover in its display position; Fig. 3 is a side elevation partly in section showing the cover in its display position and Fig. 4 is aside elevation showing the cover disengaged from the box body.
As shown in the drawings, the box comprises a body 5 which consists of a plurality of panels and flaps foldable along suitably located score lines to form the box; it will be understood that provision is made, in any well-known way, for maintaining the panels and iaps in their intended relation to eac-h ether t@ Provide the bedr The arrange- Serial No. 678,378.
ment of panels and flaps may be lsuch as to tion and arrangement of the body forming,
no part of the present invention.
The box further includes 'a cover =G which is foldably connected with an endfwall? of the body and, in .the illustrated .exam-ple. provided with side flaps 8v and an'v'encl flap 9 arranged to be tuckedr into :the body 5 to maintain the cover 4in its 4closed position. As indicated diagrammatically in l suitably advertising matter 10 is produced upon the cover 6 and is of such a character and so arranged as to be capable of being` displayed to View, when the cover is set in its open display position, as will be more fully pointed out hereinafter. y
The cover 6, and also the side flaps 8, if the latter form part of the cover, are trans# versely scored as indicated at 11, the score line being located somewhat to one side of the .center of the cover and dividing the same into panels 12 and 13 of unequal dimensions; that isto say the panel 12 at the outer end portion of said cover is somewhat larger than the panel 13 at the inner end thereof. As shown in Figs. 3 and 4 `the upper corners of the side walls 7a of the body 5 adjacent to the end wall 7 are cut away or otherwise shaped to provide notches 14 located at the corners` formed by the walls 7 and 7a and at the upper edges there of; in some cases the notches 14 may be otherwise formed but in any case will always be upwardly open and in close proximity to the end wall 7 or any other wall to which the cover 6 is hinged. I
W'ith this arrangement, when the cover 6 is folded upon itself on the score line 11 -to bring the panels 12 and 13 into surface engagement with each other or approximately so, the free end of the panel 12 will project beyond the hinged edge of the panel 13. By bringing this projecting portion of the panel 12 into the ynotches 14, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the cover will be fixed in an upright, more or lessinclined position in which that surface of the panel 12 upon which the aforesaid advertising is produced is attractively displayed to View. This display position of the cover is maintained without any assistance from the contents of the box and independently thereof and is in no way affected 'by a removal of all or a part Of said contents ,from the box.
l body.
Various changes in the speciiic form shown and described may be made within the scope ot the claim without. departing from the spirit of my invention.
I claim:
A boX comprising,- a body having upright end and side Walls and provided with open notches at corners between an end Wall and two side walls, a cover hinged to the end wall at which the notches are located and a score line extending transversely of said cover at a point to one side of its transverse center and nearer to its hinged end than to its free end whereby the cover is oldable upon said score'line into outer and inner end panels, the outer end panel in the folded position of the cover projectingoutwardly in opposite directions beyond the side walls ot' the Iloody and being larger than the inner end panel, whereby edge portions are provided on said outer end panel which project beyond the hinged edge of the inner panel into said notches to maintain the folded cover in an upright display position relatively to said body with the panels in approximate surface contact with each other.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
