1 Claim. (Cl. 229-36) This invention relates to combined shipping and dis-.
nited States Patent play boxes adapted for-useinthe shipping and/or storage of merchandise and for attractively displaying the merchandise.
The present invention contemplates the provision of a substantially rectangular box having its side and end walls disposed in planes normal to its bottom when employed in the transportation'of merchandise and movable to inclined planes 'to form a display basket for 'the'merchandise.
The invention further contemplates the provision "of a combined shipping and display box adapted to be inexpensively formed from sheet material, such as paperboard, cut and scored to provide hingedly interconnected sections foldable relative to each other to form the cover, bottom, side and end walls of the box, the cover being hinged to the upper edge of one side wall and provided with fastening means for detachable engagement with the other side wall to maintain the side walls in upright parallel planes normal to the bottom of the box.
The invention further contemplates the provision of a combined shipping and display box in which end sections are hingedly connected to opposite ends of the bottom, each end section being foldable upon itself to form inner and outer end walls defining a pocket therebetween to receive gussets hinged to opposite ends of the side walls, the free ends of the end sections extending flush along the bottom and being secured to each other.
The invention further contemplates the provision of a box structure in which the gussets and walls form an eight-sided basket display when the walls are pivoted away from each other, the outward movement of the walls being limited by engagement of the gussets with their related end walls.
The invention further contemplates a box structure having a cover foldable upon itself for display purposes and secured in folded position by engagement at its ends with adjacent gussets.
This invention embodies other novel features, details of construction and arrangement of parts which are hereinafter set forth in the specification and claim and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view illustrating a combined shipping and display box embodying features of the invention, the box being shown in its closed position to house merchandise for shipping and/or storage.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view illustrating the box in its opened display position.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view taken along the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view taken along the line 44 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a top plan view of the box, showing the cover in opened position.
Fig. 6 is a top plan view showing the box in its opened display position.
Fig. 7 is a plan view illustrating the manner in which 2,793,8012 Patented May 28, 1 957 a blank of sheet material is cut and scored to form the box. I
Referring now to the drawings'for a better understanding of the invention, a combined shipping and display box is shown as comprising a blank 2 of sheet material, such as paperboard, scored longitudinally along parallel lines 33 and transversely along parallel lines 44 to form a bottom 6, side walls 7 and '7a hingedly connected to the'bottom 6, ,end sections 8 and 8a hingedly connected to opposite ends of he bottom -6, and gussets 9 hingedly connected to opposite ends of the side walls 7 and 7a.
Each end section 8 is scored transversely at 1'1 and '12 to form hingedly connected outer and inner end walls 13 and 14, respectively, and an end portion 16 hinged to its respective inner end wall 14. The outer end of the end. section 8 is formed with a tongue 17 for engagement withina recess 18 formed in the outer end of the end section 8a.
A cover 19 .is hingedly connected along a score line 21 to the side wall 7 and is provided with side flaps 22--22 and an end flap 23 ,hingedly connected thereto along score lines 24-24 and '26, respectively. To permit the cover to be folded upon itself, the cover and end flaps22-22 are scored along the line .25. The end flaps 2222 are formedwith notches 2 7"27 along the score lines 24-24 to receive adjacent gussets 99 when the box is in its opened display position with the cover 19 folded upon itself. The end flap 23 is cut along the line 28 to form a double-ear tab 29 for interlocking engagement within bracket-shaped slits 31-31 formed in the side wall 7a.
Each gusset 9 is scored diagonally along the line 32 to form hingedly connected inner and outer gusset sections 33 and 34, respectively.
To construct a box from the blank illustrated in Fig. 7, the side walls 7 and 7a are folded upwardly and inwardly into parallel relationship above the bottom 6, and their respective gussets 9 are folded inwardly toward each other to form a generally rectangular enclosure. The end sections 8 and 8a are then folded upwardly against the outer sides of their adjacent gussets 9 and are then folded along their score lines 11 downwardly to dispose the outer and inner end walls 13 and 14 on opposite sides of their adjacent gussets 9, with their end portions 16 flush against the upper surface of the bottom 6. The gussets 9 are thus enclosed within pockets defined between related inner and outer end walls. To lock the end sections 8 and 8a to each other, the tongue 17 is engaged within the recess 18, the end portions 16 being securely held against the upper surface of the box bottom 6 by merchandise positioned within the box for shipment or display purposes.
After the box has been filled with merchandise for transportation purposes, the cover 19 is folded downwardly and the ears on the locking tab 29 are engaged within the bracket-shaped slits 31-31 formed in the side wall 7a.
After a box containing the merchandise has arrived at its destination for display of the merchandise to the public, the cover 19 is detached from the side wall 7a. The side and end walls are then folded outwardly away from each other to form an eight-sided display basket, as illustrated in Fig. 2, and the cover 19 is then folded inwardly and downwardly upon itself until the gussets on the side wall 7 are engaged within the notches 2727 formed in the end flaps 2222. Outward pivotal movement of the side and end walls is limited by engagement of the upper diagonally disposed edges 36 of the gussets 9 against the junctures of related outer and inner end walls 13 and 14.
It will be noted that a box made in accordance with the invention provides an inexpensive, sturdy container for the transportation of merchandise, and'provides an attractive eight-sided, basket-type display for the merchandise shipped therein.
While this invention has been shown in but one form, it is obvious to those skilled inthe art that it is not "so limited, but is susceptible of various changes and modifications Without departing from the spirit and scope of the claimed invention.
I claim as my invention:
A combined shipping and display container formed of a unitary paperboard blank cut,.scored :and folded to define a substantially rectangular box when closed and distendable when open to an eight-sided display basket,
engagement therein responsive to pivotal movement of said side and end walls, said gussets including inclined upper edge portions for abutting engagement with the fold of said end walls to limit the outward pivotal movement of the side and end walls to form said eight-sided basket, each gusset being scored diagonally intermediate its hinged and opposed free edge providing hingedly con- 'nected inner and outer flat portions, said diagonal score lines being disposed in alignment with adjacent side edges of the end Walls when said side and end Walls are pivoted outwardly, a cover hinged to one of said side Walls including a terminal flap adapted to lie against the opposed side Wall, and means formed on said flap engageable with complementary means formed, on the latter side wall for securing the assembly in said rectangular box form, said cover being foldable on itself and including notched lateral extensions for receiving adjacent gussets when the assembly is distended to said eight-sided display basket form.
