- CARTON Filed March 23, 1927 Patented Mar. 27, 1928.
UNITED STATES 1,664,111 PATENT OFFICE."
WILLIAM M. JOHNSON, OF URBANA, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE W. H. MARVIN" COMPANY, OF URBANA, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
CARTON.
Application filed March 23, 1927. Serial No. 17?,720.'
having the side with the largest area provided with a transparent window to display the commodity contained in the carton.
A further object of the invention'is to provide a blank so scored as to form the three sides and the ends of a carton of triangular shape, with means for locking the same in folded position so as to provide a blank which is easily and readily folded to form a carton of durable character which will retain its triangular shape in usage.
A further object of'the invention is to provide a carton which will be simple in construction, economical in manufacture andefi'ective for the purposes for which it is designed; further objects appearing from the accompanying description, claim and statement of advantages.
In the accompanying drawing:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a blank from which the carton is formed.
Fig. 2 is a front elevation.
Fig. 3 is a bottomplan. Fig. 1 is an end elevation.
Fig. 5 is a section on the line A-A of to the front 1. The bottom section 3 is provided with slits 9, and the section 4 is cut to form tongues -8. The front'section 1 iscut away to form a window 10 which is closed by a sheet 11'of transparent material,
the edges of which are pasted to the inner surface of section 1 about the opening there- -claim against the outside of the end sections 5,
the section 4 folded against theunder side of the bottom section 3, with the flaps 7 lying on the upper side of the bottom section 3, after which the tongues 8 are inserted in the slits 9.
This results in a carton in the form of a plain right-angled isosceles triangle, the bottom sections 3 and 4 forming the base, the back section 2 forming the altitude and the front section 1 the hypothenuse. It will be observed that the window is placed in that part forming the hypothenuse so that the window will be on that side of the box which has vthe greatest area and whichgives therefore the 'greatest'display space. Further, by forming the carton in this manner,
the cartons may be readily nested when filled with the commodity by placing the front or hypothenuse sidesof two cartons face to face. The transparent material employed is preferably a material known as cellophane which is not only very transparent, but also easily torn away to thereby furnish access to the goods packed in cartons so that the scribed, a very strong and durable cartonis provided which will hold itsshape when filled with the commodity and which will stand a maximum amount of usage.
The shape and construction of the blank, not only provides a carton which has a large capacity and nesting-facilities for packing purposes, as well as a large display side to display the contents to the buying public, but also when the carton is on display no locking flaps are visible because of the fact that they are on the bottom of thecarton, thus making a carton for display purposes which is attractive in appearance and pleasing to theeye.
Having thus described my invention, I
In a carton, a blank formed to provide a triangular shaped carton which is in cross section the. shape of a plane right-angled, isosceles triangle, said blank having a rectangular shaped section to form the front,
another rectangular shaped Section to form the back, and a third rectangular shaped section to form the bottom, said front section being of greater width than the other sections and provided with a transparent window, said front section'being provided at each end with a triangularly-shaped' section of right-angled form attached to said front section along' the line of its hypothenuse, a locking flap projecting from one of the sides ,of each of s'aidtriangular shaped sections,
said back section also having; at each end a I triangular shaped section attached thereto along the line of its altitude with the base thereof co-extenslve with" the adjacent side of said back section, and another section attached to said front section. adapted to overlie the bottom section and be interlocked therewith, the triangular sections which are attached to the front section being adapted to over-lie the outer side of those triangular sections which are attached to the back section so as to form the ends of the carton when'folded, the rectangular shaped locking flaps; projecting inwardly parallel with said bottom sections. v
i In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 21st day of March, 1927 WILLIAM M. JOHNSON.
