Be it known that l, DOMINIQUE nr NATLE, engineer, citizen of the French Republic, residing at Paris, Depart-ment of the Seine, in 'Franca have invented certain newhnd useful improvements in or Relating to 'Stylus Holders, of which the followis a specification.
This invention has for its object improvements in the diaphragme of talking machines, v'more' especially as regards 'the mounting of the vstylus for reproducing apparatus. rlhe stylus is generally clamped 'the end of a rod which is introduced into a socket 'for the purpose in 'the arm which is intended to transmit the vibrations of the membrane. Securing of this rod in position is effected by means of a set-screw. In spite of this arrangement the st-ylus is still subject to a certain amount ot'play which injurious to the sounds emitted by the vernedering apparatus According tothe invention this inconvenience is avoided by mounting the stylus in such manner that absolute rigidity is obtained at the extremity of the arm to which the stylus is applied. The stylus is introduced into a recess formed at the point of? a socket which is adapted to screw onto the diaphragm arm. The stylus is provided with a groove or recess to receive the spunover end of the socket against the bottom of which recess the upper" end of the stylus abuts and the length of which is eX- actly determined for this purpose. As the socket is screwed onto the end of the diaphragm arm the stylus has no play and the clearness and intensity of the reproduction is considerably improved.

in the stylus 3 and the body of the stylus is cut to a definite length so that the inner end abuts against the inner end of the containing recess.
ln the constructional form shown in Figure 3, the mounting of the stylus is exactly the same. Only the socket is shown as being slightly modified, the modification consisting in that its inner part is screw threaded in such manner as to receive the cap 7 intended to protect the stylus against shocks or vibrations while not in use. In this construction it is advantageous to provide the inner part of the socket with a shoulder 8 so as to serve as a stop for the cap 7.

In the constructional form shown in Figure 5, the end of thev amplifying arm, instead of being provided With a projecting screw threaded portion as in Figure l, is provided with a smooth portion 2. The socket carryingthe stylus is provided With a number of slots 'as shown at it This construction of the socket allows for a certain elasticity thereof. The stylus socket or carrier is bored to a diameter corresponding to the smooth portion 2 so that it can be sprung or forced into position on the projecting portion 2, the portions between the slots yielding yfor this purpose. Eiicient clamping of the stylus carrier is thus insured by the elasticity of the material between the slots.
It should be understood that if so desired a protecting capi, Which may have an interior smooth bore or a screw threaded bore, may be provided so that it can be pushed onto or screwed onto the exterior surface of the stylus carrier during the periods in Which the apparatus is not being used.
The various constructional forms ofthe mounting in accordance with the present invention can be applied to all known types of diaphragms Without limitation to the example in Figure l and the constructional details can be varied according to the dit ferent types of diaphragme or other accessory conditions and that the stylus is not intended to be :formed of any particular material because, il desired may be of any suitabie nature and form Within the scope oit the present invention. The point of the stylus intended to transmit the vibrations 'trom the membrane may be formed of any suitable material or substance.
In a device of the character described, a socket member provided in the outer portion with an inwardly extending recess, a stylus the body portion or' which is arranged in the recess and also provided with an annular groove and the outer portion ot the socket adjacent the recess being pressed inwardly and engaged in the groove to retain the inner end of the stylus body in contact with the inner end of the recess.
