Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed March 3, 1917. Serial at. 152,339.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOGAN W. NUNNALLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kiowa, in the county of Pittsburg and State of Oklahoma, have invented a new and useful Jack, of which the following is a speci fication.
The present invention appertains to jacks, and aims to provide a jack having novel and improved features of construction, to enhance the utility and eliiciency thereof, and to render the device simple and ineX- pensive in construction.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter clescribed and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein 2- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved jack, portions being shown in section.
Fig. 2 is an upper end view of the jack, the lever being partially broken away.
Figs. 3 and 4: are cross sections on the respective lines 3-3 and H of Fig. 1.
The improved jack embodies a tubular standard 1 having a suitable base 2, and a lift rod 3 slidable within the standard and provided at its upper protruding end with a seat i for the axle, wheel hub, or other object to be elevated. This rod 3 is provided. with a longitudinal series of annular grooves providing annular downwardly facing shoulders 5.
As a means for supporting the rod 3 when it is raised, the standard 1 is provided at one side with a vertical slot 6, and a clamping band 7 embraces the standard immedi ately below said slot and is provided with. outstanding terminals 8 between which a pawl Or dog 9 is pivoted upon a bolt 10 extending through said terminals 8. The band 7 and its terminals can be bent from a bar which is doubled, and the bolt 1.0 being tightened serves to clamp the band 7 upon the standard, without clamping the pawl 9. The free end of the pawl 9 projects inwardly through the slot 6 to engage under the shoulders 5 for supporting the rod 3,
and said rod can readily be moved upwardly past. the pawl 9. The pawl 9 has an upwardly projecting lug or pin 11, and the standard 1 is provided above the slot 6 with an outstanding lug or pin 12, and a coiled wire retractilc spring .13 has its end convolutions fitted upon said lugs or pins, whereby to swing the pawl against the rod 3 by spring tension. A handle let attached to the pawl 9 extends outwardly therefrom past the pivot 10, and can be depressed by hand to remove the pawl from the rod. The pawl can thus be disengaged from the rod, especially when the rod is raised slightly to remove the corresponding shoulder from the end of the pawl.
A clamping band embraces the upper terminal of the standard with its upper edge preferably flush with the upper end F of the standard, and the band 15 has outstanding terminals 16 which are in turn provided with upturned posts 17. The band 15, its terminals or portions 16 and posts 17 can be readily formed from a bar or strip of metal, doubled and bent into proper shape. The portions 16 are connected by a clamping bolt 18 which when tightened contracts the band 15 and holds it in place upon the standard, the portions 16 projecting to one side and supporting the posts 17. A suitable lever 19 is fulcrumed upon a bolt 20 or equivalent element engaged through the posts 17 adjacent to their upper ends, and is used for actuating a gripping or binding ring 21 which surrounds the rod 3 above the standard. This ring 21 is provided at one side with an outstanding lug 22 projecting toward the posts 17, and connected by a pair of links 23 with the short inner arm of the lever 19. Thus, by depressing the long outer arm of the lever, the links 23 are pulled upwardly, thereby pulling the lug likewise, and causing the ring or member 21 to tilt and grip the rod 3, thereby lifting said rod and the object seated thereon. The ring 21 is engageable under the shoulders 5.
By raising the rod 3 with the ring 21, and disengaging the pawl 9 from the rod, the rod can be lowered by lowering the ring 21 until it seats upon the upper end of the standard and upper edge of the band 15, which disengages the ring 21 from the rod, so that the rod will slide downwardly by gravity. It will be noted that the strains imposed up on the portions 16 of the band 15 as well as the terminal portions 8 of the band 7 will tend to cause said bands to bind upon the standard 1.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is A jack embodying a tubular standard having a slot at one side, a lift rod slidable in the standard, means for raising said rod, a band embracing the standard below said slot and having outstanding terminal portions, means connecting said portions for clamping the band on the standard, a pawl mounted between said portions and projecting through said slot to engage the rod and support it, the pawl having an upwardly projecting lug, the standard having an out ardly projecting lugabove the slot and a LOGAN, W. NUNNALLY.
