UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIG.
JACOB J. DIEHL AND HORACE MANN, OF HABRISBUBG, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN HOSTC'OU'PLlNGS.
Speeii :ation forming part of Letters Patent No. 149,725, dated April 14, 1871; application filed November 13, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JACOB J. DIEHL and HORACE MANN, of Harrisburg, in the county of Dauphin and in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and usefulv Improvements in Hose-Coupling; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this speciication. Y
The object of our invention is to construct a hose-coupling withthe least possible incumbrance or obstruction on the outside, so'as to be easily dragged or pulled up a ladder, or over roofs, without eatchin g fast, as those now in use often do, and one which maybe coupled and look itself in a moment perfectly tight and safe with out screwing or fixing fastenings. The nature of our invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a hose-coupling, formed of a female part having inclined or curved slots on opposite sides, and a male part provided with two lugs to enter the slots in the female part, a-nd a ratchet device for locking the two parts together automatically, all as hereinafter more fully set forth.
AIn order to enable others skilled in the art to which our invention appertaius to make and use the same, we will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a perspective view, showing the two parts of the coupling detached from each other; and Fig.'2 is a section showing the ratchet-lever for locking the two parts together.
A represents the female part of the coupling, having two slots, a a, cut through it in opposite sides, which slots may be inclined or curved, as shown, and are cut through from B represents the male part of the coupling, provided with two lugs, b b, on opposite sides, to enter the slots a a in the female part A, and, by turning the male part, the lugs move down into said slots, drawing the two parts firmly together. In the rim C of the male part B is made a mortise, in which is pivoted a ratchetlever, D, the toothed end of which is pressed downward by a spring, d, as shown in Fig. 2. The other or handle end of the lever D projects in a recess out out in the top of the rim C, said rim thus completely covering and inclosing the fastening device. The ratchetlever D takes into teeth x x, formed in the edge of the female part A, and thereby locks the coupling automatically as the male part is beinginserted in the female part. By raising the end of the lever D, it is released from the teeth a: o0, and the two parts A B may be easily separated.
rIhis coupling is simple and effective, can be coupled in an instant, and obviates the disadvantages of the usual screw-coupling.
Having thus fully described our invention,
what we' claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. rlhe ratchet-lever or fastening D, concealed and secured within the permanent rim C of the malepart B of a hose-coupling, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The combination of the female part A, having curved or inclined slots a a, the male part B, having lugs b b and permanent rim C, and the self-fastenin g device D, concealed and secured within the rim C, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing we have hereunto set our hands ,this 1st day v of November, 1873.
