SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 613,229, dated November 1, 1898.

Be it known thatLOHARLEs LoUIs BECKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Keokuk, in the county of Lee and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stovepipe or other Couplings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to sheet-metal pipes, and more particularly to couplings for connecting sections of stovepipe together.
One object of the present invention is the provision of an improved coupling for raingutters, Stovepipe-sections, and otherpipes of a similar kind which will be extremely simple and inexpensive and adapted for rapid and easy application to any type of sheet-metal pipe during manufacture or afterward.
A further object is to provide an improved pipe-coupling, particularly for stovepipes, which when coupled will remain securely locked and will be adapted for ready looking or unlocking at all times, so that connection or separation of the pipe-sections can be rapidly accomplished whenever desirable.
Having the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention embraces a hook of improved construction on one of the pipe-sections and an improved keeper for the hook on the other pipe-section.
The invention also resides in certain peculiarities of construction in the hook and in other novel features of the parts of the coupling and their position and manner of connection to the pipe-sections, as will more fully appear hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front view of two stovepipe-sections equipped with my improved coupling, which is shown locked; Fig. 2, a perspective view showing the Stovepipe-sections fitted together and the hook swung aside in position for its tip to bear against and ride on the stovepipe-section, and Fig. 3 a detail view of the hook.
Two stovepipe-sections of ordinary construction are shown at 1 and 2, respectively, the same having their seams secured by rivets 3.
The numeralat designates akeeper consisting of a flat strip of metal, preferably sheetiron, extending longitudinally of the pipesection 1 and having its ends secured to the same by two of the rivets 3 and its intermediate portion arched or looped for the reception of the hook now to be described.
My improved book 5 is stamped or cut in a single piece from sheet metal, sheet-iron being preferably employed, as it is cheap and of the same material as the stovepipe and possesses sufficient resiliency to adapt it for this particular purpose. The shank 6 is substantially straight and flat; but the head 7, which is disposed substantially at right angles to the shank, is bowed or curved to such a degree that it constitutes the arc of a circle of approximately the diameter of the stovepipesection 1, so that the tip of said head will be adapted to bear against and ride on the pipesection when the hook is being swung to coupling position and when received in the loop of the keeper will fit closely against the pipesection, and thus lock itself. The end of the shank is pivoted to pipe-section 2 on a rivet 8, which is disposed at one side of an imaginary line drawn through the seams of the pipe-sections and the keeper, by reason of which during the further closing of the hook the resiliency thereof causes the head to press against the section and after entering the keeper to lock itself, thereby preventing accidental uncoupling.
The present invention can be applied to the pipe-sections during or after their manufacture, and by reason of the construction of its parts can be stamped or cut from sheet metal with rapidity and at trifling expense.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a pipe-coupling, the combination with pipe-sections, of a hook of resilient properties having its shank pivoted to one of the sections and its head arched or bowed so that its tip will be adapted to strike against and ride on the other section and eventually embrace the same when the hook is being closed, and a keeper on the other section for the head of the hook.
