which the following is a specification.
Our present invention relates to paper feeding mechanism for typewriting machines and its principal object is to provide new and improved mechanism of the character stated.
To the above and other ends which will hereinafter appear our invention consists in the features of construction, combinations 'of devices and arr-an ements of parts herein- 26 after described 8.115 particularly pointed out in the claims.

As appears from Figs. 1-3 the carriage of the machine comprises an inclined rear plate composed of top and bottom grooved bars 1 and 2 and connecting webs providing an inclined bar 3. Fixed to the ends of the plate 1'3 are forwardly extending side so plates 4, the carriage thus constituted carrymg a rotary cylindrical platen 5. The carriage is adapted to travel back and forth along the fixed grooved guide rails 6 and TYPEWRITING MACHINE.

The member 13 of each three point bearing is spring mounted and yieldable so that the axlesections may be withdrawn from their bearings, enabling the platen and axle together to be readily removed without the necessity of loosening any screws or other preliminary operations.
Co-operative with the platen for paper feeding purposes are various sets of pressure and feedingdevices, and our invention primarily relates to the means for mounting and controlling said devices. Comprised therein is a main pressure or feed roller device composed of feed roller sections 15 preferably composed of rubber or the like and provided withmetal hub portions 16 which project beyond the ends of the roller sections. The feed roller sections, of which there are four in the present instance, are frictionally mounted on a rod or shaft 17, and are suitably spaced apart along said shaft. The latter is of small diameter and is flexible to compensate for inequalities occurring in feeding material'through the machine. may be varied as found desirable. The main feed roller device or sectional feed roller comprising sections 15 co operates with the underside of the platen at its rear, the shaft s or axle 17 of the device being detachably mounted on arms 18, which at their forward ends, as best appears from Fig. 5, are fixedly secured. to elongated hubs 19 having flanges 20, said hubs being rotatable on a cross rod or bar 21, which extends longitudinally of and below the platen at its forward side, said rod at its ends being received in holes in the side plates 4. The springs 29 are self-maintaincd. that i. ,Iliey are held in place by frietion generated by themselves, and consequently may be readily slipped out of place or moved. The scconda v pressure or feed roller device sc -operates With the platen forward of the main feed roller device, said secondary device comprising teed roller parts or sections 30, there being tour of such insane? sections 30 in the present instance, all frictionally mounted on a, rod or shaft. 31, which is flexible to assist in taking care of inequalities occurring during feeding. The feed roller device 30. 31 is rotatably supported on arms 32 of which there are four in the present instancc, these arms extending forward and upward from a rock shaft 33 on which they are supported through intermediate devices or hubs ill. The paper feeding and pressure. devices further comprise a pair of guiding members or fingers arranged at the front side of the platen and adjustable lengthwise thereof. Each finger, designated as a whole by the numeral 42, is preferably made of a single piece of sheet metal and comprises an upright portion 43 and an integral horizontally disposed portion 44 at right-angles thereto. The finger portion 43 extends crosswise of the printing line and is provided at its upper end with a pressure roll 45 which bears rotatably. on a headed screw pivot 46 that is carried by the finger portion 43. The upper end of the portion 43 is curled at 43 (Fig. 1) to provide a support for the shank of the screw pivot 46. The horizontal portion 44 is provided at its lower side in line with the finger portion 43 with a contact device 47 which is effective to operate certain line locking mechanism not comprised in our present invention but which is disclosed and claimed in the application of Arthur W. Smith, Six-No. 515,- 890, filed Nov. 17, 1921. Thehorizontal portion 44 is also provided near its ends with pairs of clips or engaging devices 48 which are struck from the sheet metal of the part 44 itself and fit over a rectangular supporting bar Said bar extendslengthwise of theplaten at its front side and below the printing line, and the paper guiding devices or paper finger contrivances 42 are slidably mounted on said bar. The front face of the bar is preferably grooved or a seat for an inset scale of the paper finger cowith said scale to faciladjustment of the paper 50, and the edge 51 operates as a pointer itate the lengthwise I finger contrivances in respect to the platen.
Near its ends the bar 49 is provided with rearwardly extending lugs 52 that are perforated to bear on extensions or pins 53 projecting outward from the forward ends of the bracket arms 23. These arms, it may be noted, are bendable so as to afford adjustment of the paper finger supporting bar -19 both in an up and down direction and also away from and back towards the front face Said arms extend forward under the platen-and are provided with side lugs 22 to which are secured by headed screws 54springs tongues 55 that bear at their free ends against the rear ends of the lugs 52, thus tending to turn the bar 49 on its pivots 53 and maintaining the pressure rolls 45 in spring pressed engagement with the platen for the paperjthereon above the printing line.
Other of the paper guiding devices com- I portions or lips 57 and prise a shield, apron or deflector in the form of a curved plate 56 of sheet metal which is arr: god under the platen and is cut out or slotillid at its rear and front edges to accommodate respectively the sections 15 of the main feed roller and the sections 30 of the secondary feed rollers, leaving projecting 58 between the roller sections. Near its ends the deflector or guide plate 56 is provided with clip devices comprising pairs of spring fingers 59 and 60. These pairsof fingers are secured at their forward ends to the bottom of the defiector plate by rivets 61, and their rear end portions are free and adapted to be pressed apart to accommodate or seat. pins 62 on which the deflector plate is pivotallylsup ported. The lower finger 60 of each pair is depressed to provide a seat for the pin 62 and the construction is such that when the platen is removed the deflector plate'may be readily detached by pulling it forward and upward, causin .theclip members or fingers 59, 60 to yield or spread to release the pins 62. ()n the other hand, the deflector plate may be readily replaced, the ends of the fin ers 59 and 60 being so shaped that when t ey are pushed against the pins they will 5 read on separate so as to reengage with the pins. )Said pins 62 are supported on and project laterally from ears 63 which are bent upward from fixed to the back bar 3 the screws 26, the plates brackets 22-25.
The guiding devices further include a per table preferably formed of two or table parts 65 and 66 whichare lunged together so that they are capable of relative movement. The plate 65 is inclined upward and rearward behind the platen so as to form a bight therewith to receive the paper when it is inserted. The-lower end of the plate 65 is formed with long and short fingers numbered which fingers are so disposed along the lower edge or the table or plate 65 that they co-operate with the feed roll sections 15 and the rear projecting lips 57 of the deflector 56 to provide a comparatively uninterrupted surface over which the paper may be introduced. Thus the fingers 68 terminate just above the tops of the feed roller sections 15 while the longer fingers 67 project downward between the feed roller sections and close to the rear edge portions of the projections or lips so that no opening is afi'orded through which the edge of the paper might accidentally slip down or be introduced to cause trouble. of the bar por pressions or countersinks (55 in the surface of the plate 65, enabling the heads of the screw, 69 to be countersunk below the surface of the plate (35, so that there may be no obstruction or projection to interfere with the smoothness of introduction of paper over this surface. At its ends the plate is provided with upwardly extending arms 70 between which tl plate is bent or inclined rearward, providing a lip Tl. The arms 70 are riveted or otherwise secured to the rear of the plate and are made of stock sutliciently thick to enable it to be perforated or bored out to provide hearing openings for a pivot rod 72, which extends lengthwise of the plate 65 slightly above the lip 71. The pivot rod 72 is fixed to the plate or upper table portion (56 which. is provided near its ends with eyemembers 73 fitting over the rod 72, said rod being fixed therctoby cross pins Tl. Thus the pivot rod 72 and the plate 36 are secured rigidly together and the construction issuch that the plate or table portions 66 may be swung forward on its hearings in the arms 70 so as to afford access to various stop devices or other parts not shown, which are arranged behind and below the table part 66. This part, as will be seen from Fig. l, is angular in cross section and its upper surface is normally substantially horizonta while its forward inclined portion is in line with the lower plate 65, which wholly sup ports the part 66. The lower edge of the plate 66 is curved rearward to provide a lip 75 in correspondence with the lip Tl, these two li s co-operating with the rod 72 to give a finis ed appearance to the two-part paper table. The upper end portions of the arms 70 act as stops to limit backward rotation of the plate 66, and assist to maintain it in normal position illustrated in Fig. l.
The main and secondary "feed rollers and the paper deflector or apron together \Vlbll the paper finger contrivances are simultaneously releasable or movable out of operative engagement with the platen by hand operated releasing devices. Said releasing" devices comprise the rock shaft 33 to which are secured a set of releasing fingers 76 provided with hub portions 77 that fit over the shaft 33 and are secured thereto by cross pins 73. From thebubs 77 project. integral arms 79 which terminate in lateral extensions or fingers 80 which overlie and are adapted to contactiv ely en 'age with pins 81 fixed to and projecting aterally from the neighboring arms 18, said contactive engagement taking place when the shaft 33 is rocked. To rock or operate the shaft 33 it is assooiated with devices comprising a crank arm 82 which is arranged outside the left-hand carriage plate 4, said crank arm being pro vided with a hub 83 which fits over and is pinned to a stub shaft 8s. This shaft Set,
will understood from Fig, 3, is or ranged in line with the rock shaft 33, the stub shaft 8 hearing in a perforation in the left-hand plate l, and the inner end of said stub shaft terminating close to the lefthand end of the shaft 33. The end of the crank arm 82 is pivotally connected at 85 with a lever or toggle member 86 which extends upward behind the left-hand axle 9 and curves forward normally over the top of said axle, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, said lever member 35 terminating in a laterally bent finger portion or release key 87. The lower end of the lever member 86 below its pivotal connection is pivotally connected at 88 with a link or toggle member 8!) which is pivoted at 90 to the outer face of the bar or plate 4. The pivot- 90 is a flanged eccentric device which is rotatably adjustable on a headed clamping screw 90 which passes through the eccentric 90 and is threaded into the end-bar l.
As appears from Fig. 3, the abutting ends of the shaft 33 and. the stub shaft 84 are housed or covered by an elongated hub 91 from which at its left-hand end projects a forwardly extending crank arm 92 terminating in an upstanding nose or contact 93. The hub 9t is fixed to the shaft 33 by a cross pin 94, the constriu-tion being such that the crank arm 92 and the shaft 33 are rigid with each other while the outer or left-hand end portion of the hub 91 provides a socket which fits over the inner end of the stub shaft 84. Welded to or otherwise secured to the inner end portion of the stub shaft between the plate 4t and the crank arm 92 is a crank arm 95 which is parallel with and contiguous to the crank arm' 92. The two crank arms are connected by a pin and hole connection, a lateral pin 96 extending rightward from the free end of the crank arm 95 and fitting in a hole in the crank arm 92. l'he construction is such that rocking motion received by the stub shaft 84 from the key 87 is transmitted to the rock shaft 33 through the two connected crank arms 95 and 952, the two shafts 84 and. 33 operatin in effect as a single shaft. It may be noted here that the purpose of the two-shaft construction is to permit the detachment and removal of the shaft 33 and associate parts without disturbing or affecting the shaft 33 and the connections associated with it out side the end plate 4, said connections comprising the members 86 and 89. It will be understood that all that is necessary to disconnect the two shafts is to drive out the pin 94 and then slip the hub 91 rightward along the shaft 33 until said hub disengages from the stub shaft 84. The nose 93 in which the crank arm 92 terminates underlies an arm 97 rigid with and projecting rearward from the paper finger bar 49 near the left end ofthe latter. The parts 92, 97 provide an operavices the finger piece 87 is pushed backward .to act against the with the result that the crank arm 82 is turned rearward and the shafts 84 and 33 rocked rearward. This has the eifect of depressing the extensions 80, causing them pins 81 to swing down the arms 18 against the pressure of springs 29 and carry the main feed roller sections 15 away from the platen, or from the Fig. 1 to the Fig. 4 position. The downward swing of the arms 18 operates through the pin and; slot connections 40, 41 to overcome the springs 38 and swing the arms 32 downward, thus releasing the secondary feed rollers 30, as shown in said Fig. 4; and at the same time the deflector 56 drops down around its pivots 62 away from the platen. The rocking of the shafts 84 and 33 as described also acts to swing upward the crank arm 92, causing the nose 93 to press against the underside of the arm or crank 97, turning the bar 49 on its pivots 53 and swinging the position, as shown in Fig. 4. The paper feeding devices will be held in inoperative or released position as shown, due to the straightening out and consequent locking of the toggle parts 89, 86; In order to restore the parts to operative engagement with the laten the release key 87 is pulled forward,
' reaking the toggle and allowing the restoring springs to become effective on their associate parts to return them against the platen.
Our present invention provides paper feeding and controlling mechanism, the elements whereof may to a great extent be "readily removed one at a time without the aid of tools. Said mechanism as a whole may also be readily detached, as it is for the most part mounted on a pair of detachable brackets; and as a preliminary to detaching the brackets and removing the mechanism as a whole it is merely neces sary to take out the rod 21'. For example, the platen may be removed when thepins or plungers 13 are somewhat retracted, thus leaving the deflector 56 exposed so that it may be detached by pulling it out, the spring fingers 59 and readily releasing the pivot pins 62. Thereupon the main or secondary feed rollers may be lifted out of place, the different springs may be removed,- the paper finger bar and paper fingers may .be, detached byforcing out the pivot pins 52, and so forth. Another useful feature of the invention is that the main part 33 of.
the release shaft may be removed with paper fingers 42 forward to released ing through the frame,
Various changes may be made without departing from our invention.
What we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
