To all whom it may concern Be it known that we,'EDwAnD E. GoMPERs, of New York city, county of Kings, and LEO New. and PAUL HEIN, of New York city, county of New York, State of New York, citizens of the United States, have invented new and useful Improvements in Stencil- Making Machines, of which the following is a specification.

The object'of this invention is to provide means for make stenciling upon paper by means of type impressions in a position visible to the operator.

The invention comprises a medium hav ing type bars, keys, a carriage having a printing platen or roll, and means to detachably retain a stencil sheet or card on the carriage in front of the platen in position to be struck by the type of the type bars.

The invention also comprises such detail that will be more fully hereinafter set forth and then pointed out in the claims.

Reference'to be had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein Fig. 1 is a plan view of a machine embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a cross section of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail section through the stencil holder; Fig. 4: is a detail plan view, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of part of the card holder.

Similar numerals of. reference indicate corresponding parts in the several drawings.

Our improvements are shown in connection with a typewriting machine of the front-strike variety. The main frame is indicated at 1, having type bars 2 pivotally supported at 3 and provided with alphabetical and numerical type 2. Finger keys are indicated at 4 pivotally supported at 5 and. operatively connected at 6 with the type bars. A carriage 7 is slidably carried by bars 8, 9. A spring drum 10 and escapement 11. operated by the keys, feed the carriage as usual. Ribbon 12 may be carried by spools 13 in an ordinary manner. The above named parts may be of any usual or approved form and construction adapted for use with our improvements.

At 14 is indicated a stencil, shown in the form of a card having a thin paper piece or sheet 15 secured on one side of the card in register with an opening let in the card through which the paper may be struck or impressed by the type 2". A holder for the stencil is indicated at 16, shown provided with side webs 17 pivotally supported at 18 Specification of Letters Patent.

upon carriage 7 to extend across in front of the platen or roll 7" of the carriage. The pivots at 18 may be screws or bolts secured in holes 17 in webs 17 at opposite ends of holder 16 and supported on the side members 7 of the carriage. Holder 16 is spaced sufficiently in front of the platen to admit stencil therebetween extending above and below the holder. Holder 16 is shown provided with clips or ears 19 extending along the inner side of the holder opposite the front parts 16' thereof to retain the upper part of the stencil in position. The middle portion of the holder is open at 16 to expose the paper 15 of the stencil to be struck by the type 2, (Fig. Holder 16 is shown provided with rollers 20 journaled upon ears or lugs 21 on the holder adjacent to openand its rollers 20 toward the platen.

The inner edge of the top plate 1 of frame 1 and the wall 1 of said frame eX- tend substantially straight across the frame leaving the rear portion 26 of the frame free and unobstructed for and open above the travel with the carriage ofthe portion of the stencil depending from the carriage. Also said open portion 26 of frame 1 extends tothe sides thereof, to permit lateral travel ofthe stencil, the to and fro travel of the carriage being limited so that the side edges of the stencil will not engage the sides of frame 1. Since the holder is maintained on the carriage by pivots 18 and rolls20 at a rearward angle the stencil depends at a rearward angle in the open space 26 the lower edge of the stencil will be behind the type bar bearings, s that drip of water frequently placed upon stencils will not drop upon the bearings. The holder 16 retains the stencil between the sides 7 of the carriage, so that when said carriage is stopped by the margin stops 24:, 25, the stencil will not engage the latter.

When the stencil is to be used it is inserted in the holder in an upward position in front of the platen, the upper laterally bent edges of the holder and clips 19 facilitating insertion of the stencil. The stencil will be adjusted with its paper 15 exposing the open space of the holder, preferably with carriage, theholder extendingv upwardly in I I v )aper 15 against the platen in position to as struck by the type 2*. Since the. rollers against the platen, the stencil will be fed upwardly or downwardly in the holder when the platen is appropriately rotated, whereby different lines of type may be impressed upon paper 15. By reason of'the pivotal support of the stencil holder on the carriage, stencils of varying thickness may be fed between the holder and the platen and held against the latter by the rolls 20; The ribbon can be moved from type striking position by any desired means, such as known in. the 'typewritingart.

Since the machine described is like an ordinary front-strike typewriting machine, in the main parts, any typewriter operator may readily operate the machine for producing typeiinpressions on the stencil, the latter being visible to the operator, while writing, which will be of great advantage in producing stencils for use. Cards and paper, other than stencils. may be supported in the holder for typewritingthereon. Having now'described ourinvention, what we claimis z cillthe holder being provided with spaced rolls to press the stencil against the platen, and spring means normally pressing the holder and its rolls toward the platen.

2. A writing machine having a carriage provided with a platen. type bars to strike at the front of the carriage. keys to operate the type bars. a stencil holder, means pivot,- allv supporting the lower portion of the holder on the lower forward portion of the front of the platen, said holder having rolls to press the stencil against the platen, and spring means normally pressing the holder and its rolls toward the front of the platen.

3. A writing machine having a carriage provided with a platen, type bars't'o' strike at the front of the carriage, keys to operate the type bars, bearings for the keys, a stencil holder pivotally supported. by the carriage at arearward angle thereto, in front of the platen,-the plane of the holder passing behind the key bearings, said holder having rolls to press the stencil against the platen, and one or more springs connecting the holder with the carriage to press the rolls against the stencil, the holder and platen maintaining the stencil at an angle to the key hearings to prevent drip from the stencil dropping on said bearings.

4. The combination of a carriage having aplate-n, with a stencil holder having side webs extending toward and pivotally supported at the lower portion by the lower forward portion of the carriage to retain the holder in front of the platen, said holder having an open portion to expose the stencil, and resilient means to press the holder to; ward the platen.
